PUNXSUTAWNEY — Trevor Yount is running for the Punxsutawney Area School Board as a write-in candidate for the Region VI seat — the region of those who vote at the Woodland Avenue site in the upcoming election on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Yount is challenging the seat currently held by Cindy Depp-Hutchinson.

A native to Punxsutawney, Yount’s parents are Darl and Cheri Yount, also of Punxsutawney. He and his wife, Tiffany, have come back to the area to raise their two children, Aria and Cameron, and also keep in close contact with Haiden and Evelyna, who live in Mississippi. Yount is currently a Pennsylvania state corrections officer of six years and member of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society and Eta Theta University of Phoenix, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice administration. He previously worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Florida Department of Corrections.

Yount has volunteered his time coaching soccer, baseball and basketball in Panama City, Florida, on Tyndall Air Force Base, and coached for the Punxsutawney Soccer Association for three years and plans on doing so again in the future.

As a conservative, Yount said he believes in transparency and democracy from the board to the community and teachers alike. He stands for an “open door” policy, meaning he wants teachers, administrators, parents and all families to feel comfortable in coming to him with their concerns. He said he will listen to them and do his best to represent each one of them at the meetings and be ready to make difficult decisions for children at PASD.
