Home runs and big hits abound in Lady Chucks doublehead­er night against Bradford

PUNXSUTAWN­EY — The Punxsutawn­ey Lady Chucks softball team had a good day at home on Monday, where they went on beat Bradford in a doublehead­er, winning 12-0 and 19-2. And it was also Senior Night for the Lady Chucks. The two wins move the Lady Chucks to 9-6 in the season.

“This was a great way to celebrate Senior Night,” said Punxsy coach Brad Constantin­o. “We’ve picked up our power game in the last two or three weeks, and we’re hitting some balls we weren’t hitting at the beginning of the year.”

He added, “The seniors have shown me a ton of character this year. They’ve come to work every night, and they’ve done everything we’ve asked of them. They’ve supported the younger girls, and it’s so nice for them to have a big night like this.”

In the first game, the Lady Chucks opened with one run scored in the first inning, as Avary Powell scored on an error, making it 1-0.

By the end of the second inning, Punxsy was up 9-0, as Sydney Hoffman hit a double to score senior Rachel Houser to make it 2-0.

In a big double, Ciarra Toven picked up three RBIs to push the score 5-0, while Kaylee Guidice had a sac fly to score

Toven to make it 6-0.

Following that, senior Laura Rittenhous­e hit a triple to score two runners and make it 8-0, and Rittenhous­e scored on an error to end the inning with Punxsy up 9-0.

Emily Dobbins opened the third inning for Punxsy with a home run to make it 10-0, and a few at-bats later, Brooke Skarbek had a big single to score two runs and make it 12-0, where it stood until the end of the game.

In the first game, Toven worked fourand-half innings with nine strikeouts, no walks and one hit given up.

Toven had three hits, while Rittenhous­e, Powell, Dobbins and Houser all had two hits apiece. Also, Guidice, Karli Young, Skarbek and Hoffman all had one hit apiece.

In game two, the Lady Chucks opened with two runs scored. Toven hit a double to score Powell to make it 1-0, and right after that, freshman Brooke Young hit a sac fly to bring home a runner to make it 2-0.

The Lady Owls did score two runs in the first inning, both on errors. But by the end of the second inning, Punxsy was up again at 8-2.

Dobbins scored Houser to make it 3-2, while Powell hit a home run right after that to make it 5-2 with Dobbins coming home as well.

Skarbek singled to score Toven to being the affair to 6-2, and with one unearned run, Rittenhous­e had a single to make it 8-2.

In the third inning, Toven hit a home run to make it 10-2 after bringing home Powell as well. Two runs scored on error saw the game go into fourth with the Lady Chucks still up 12-2.

Toven hit a big single to score Dobbins and Powell to make it 14-2, and Brooke Young followed that up with a single to score Toven to push it to 15-2.

Freshman Brynn Hergert had a double to score Young, and with Rittenhous­e singling to score a run, it was 17-2. Dobbins picked up another RBI to make it 18-2, and Powell pushed it to 19-2 with a single to bring a runner home.

On the mound, Hergert struck out four and gave up one hit. Rittenhous­e and Dobbins both had three hits apiece, while Powell, Skarbek, Hergert, Toven and Young all had two hits apiece.
