Brookville school board sees updated budget

- By Justin Felgar Of The Spirit

BROOKVILLE — Business manager Ellen Neyman gave the updated, proposed budget to the Brookville Area School Board on Monday. If the budget is approved at this week’s voting meeting, it will be advertised to the public before being approved at the June 20 school board voting meeting.

Neyman said the district will receive $186,000 from gambling revenues, which she said all the school districts received. She said they have 3,600 qualifying homesteads, which will still receive an extra $50 off their tax bills.

She said that was the biggest surprise of the budget. The budget still shows no tax increase. She said they had still received no updates from Harrisburg as to what allocations they will get, so she went with her original projections.

She said she updated the federal fund sources to reflect the latest data. She said Title I was increased to reflect summer schools, long-term substitutes, required community involvement supplies and software. She said Title II was increased to reflect professional development and social worker costs, while Title IV now reflects the high school resource officer. She said ARPESSER III shows additional funds. Other federal funds that were updated include: the state setasides (LL and SS) for ARP ESSER III, AFP-Homeless Children and Youth, and Medical Assistance Reimbursements for ACCESS.

The final numbers for the proposed 2022-2023 budget are: revenues, $29,207,512; less ESSER revenue for staff maintenance, $1,364,391; net revenue, $27,843,121; expenses, $31,292,988; difference, $3,449,867; less budgetary reserve, $837,195; net difference, $2,612,672; transfers to capital for five-year plan, $2,589,980; addition (reduction) of fund balance, $22,692.

Neyman said this is the closest to a balanced budget the district has seen in years, and the deficit would be taken up by the PSERS commitment.

She said there is still time for any changes before they pass the final budget.
