Library planning ocean adventures this summer
PUNXSUTAWNEY — As the end of the school year quickly approaches and you’re wondering what you’re going to do with the kiddos this summer, here’s a good place to start: the Punxsutawney Memorial Library and its Summer Reading Program.
Nate Pyles, youth program coordinator, invites everyone to learn about the wonders of the ocean playing fun games and activities and making cool crafts all based around this year’s theme: “Oceans of Possibilities.”
Pyles said that the first class is June 6.
The classes are:
• Wees, ages 18 to 35 months, June 6 through June 9, at 11 a.m.
• Pre-K, ages 3 to 5 years, June 20 through June 23, at 11 a.m.
• Elementary, K to 3rd grade, July 11 through July 14, at 11 a.m.
• Elementary, grades 4th through 6th, July 11 through July 14, at 1 p.m.
• Tweens and Teens, grades 7th through 12th at 1 p.m.
Registration is underway in person at the library. Pyles said that he has
a couple of family nights planned as well.
“I’ll read a couple of stories to the younger kids while they’re here and they’ll receive a reading log to keep track of their books and the number of chapters and pages they read,” Pyles said, adding that there will be games, activities and crafts related to the ocean.
Pyles said that each group will have the same theme and subject matter, which is geared toward each age group.
He said the library district comes up with the themes each year.
“We just have to decorate, and they send us a book with suggestions for each day and age group,” Pyles said.
The children’s area is all decorated with an ocean theme, and the new youth area is on the second floor and still being updated.
Each group will have wrap-up parties Aug. 8 through Aug. 11.
You must register in person at the library; there will be no online registration.
The library is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Fridays, noon to 5 p.m.; and closed on Sundays.
