Brookville Junior Legion wins series 2-1 over Punxsy for Indiana League Championship
PUNXSUTAWNEY — With the series tied at 1-1, the Punxsutawney S&T Bank and Brookville Fireman’s Club junior legion baseball teams returned to Punxsy for game three of the Indiana Junior Legion League Championships on Wednesday evening.
During game one, Brookville won 10-8, but in game two, Punxsy won that match 6-5.
In game three, a big third inning for the Fireman’s Club secured an 8-4 win for them and a spot in the next round to played later this month.
In the third inning, Brookville put in five runs, while also scoring a runner in the first, fifth and sixth innings. Brookville also outhit S&T 11-3, while committing four errors to Punxsy’s two.
Punxsy scored one run in the first inning, while also bringing in a runner in the fourth and fifth innings.
In the fifth inning, Alex Shumaker had a sac fly to score a runner and cut Brookville’s lead to 7-4 at the time.
But in the sixth inning, Brookville’s Landen Marrara had a big sac fly to advance a runner, who eventually stole home to make it 8-4.
In the seventh inning, Coy Martino hit a big single and Shumaker was walked in an attempt to stay alive, but a double play by the Fireman’s Club ended the Punxsy threat and gave them the 8-4 win and the Indiana Junior Legion League Championship.
For Brookville, Pierson Ruhlman had three hits, while Ladd Blake and Owen Fleming both had two hits apiece. Also, Blake, Ruhlman and Kolton Griffin all had one RBI apiece.
On the mound, Brookville’s Griffin worked four innings and struck out two, while Punxsy’s Martino struck out six in four innings. Also, Brookville’s Ruhlman struck out one in relief.
