ST. MARYS — The Punxsutawney Chucks Tennis team had a good day on the road on Thursday, as they bested the hosting Elk County Catholic Crusaders 5-2.

“It was a huge win against ECC,” said Chucks Head Coach Mike Emhoff. “We had a strong showing in all of the matches. With the one and two singles winning, and with the one doubles also winning, it came down to Alex Deppen as the three singles.”

In the third singles match, Deppen won 2-1 (4-6, 6-1, 10-8) over the Crusaders to follow his teammates Dana Smith (6-2, 6-4) and Michael Setree (6-3, 6-0), who won their matches at 2-0.

“After loosing a close first set, Deppen battled back to dominate the second set, forcing a third-set tiebreaker, which he held on to win,” said Emhoff. “He showed a lot of patience and perseverance.”

In the fourth singles match, the Chucks Logan Conner fell to the home after a 7-4 tiebreaker.

In doubles action, the Chucks won 2-1, starting with the Punxsy duo of Smith/Setree winning 8-3. That team was followed by the grouping of Griffin White/Ethan Booher, who won 8-0.

In the third doubles match, the Punxsy duo of Abe Santos/Adem Kural fell 8-3 to the home team.

“The two doubles finished the match with a very strong showing, and Coach Good and I are were very impressed with the competition that our guys showed.”
