BUTLER — The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks Track and Field team took part in the 59th-Annual Butler Invite on Friday, with many teams in attendance.

“It was nice to see all the girls rise to the opportunity to compete in such a high-caliber meet, and I’m hoping that it motivates them to continue to be more competitive over the weeks ahead,” said Lady Chucks Head Coach John Snyder.

Earning two medals after finishing in the top eight in two events was junior Mary Grusky, who took second in javelin (133-07) and third in the discus (109-08).

Plus, both finishes were improvements upon her marks from last year’s invite.

Senior Hannah Surkala qualified for Districts in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:50.98, while she was also part of the 4x800meter relay team that also qualified for Districts with a time 10:11.65 to take 10th. Taylor Bair, Emily McMahan and Riley Miller were also part of the 4x800 relay.

The 4x800 relay improved 10 seconds on their time from the Butler Invite last year, and they find themselves ranked in top 10 in AA in the state. Also, Miller and Surkala both ran new personal-best splits in the event.

Freshman Natalie Burkett ran a new personalbest time of 1:04.85 in the 400-meter dash, while Snyder added that, despite a disqualification, the 4x100-meter relay team had some excellent splits.

In the pole vault, Elliana Kostok finished with a height of 9-02, while both Cheyenne Gervasoni (28-02.5) and Alexxus Runyon (26-07) both had new personal bests.

The Lady Chucks will return to action at home by hosting ECC on Tuesday afternoon.
