Colonie hands Troy 62-59 loss in season opener

ALBANY >> The Troy High School boys basketball team is going to have to at least wait one more game to secure it’s first victory as a member of the Suburban Council.

Troy fell 62-59 on the road at Colonie in the Flying Horses’ season opener.

“Great effort, first high school hoops game,” Troy head coach Rich Hurley said. “Congratula­tions to Colonie. They made the plays down the stretch when it mattered most. We didn’t guard in the first half and that’s what I said to my team. If we don’t play defense (we can’t win), and we didn’t play defense at all in the first half.”

The first quarter was back-andforth, with both teams struggling to get some separation and the first eight minutes ending with a 17-15 Colonie lead.

But after eight tight minutes of play the Flying Horses soon fell behind.

The Garnet Raiders carried their momentum from the first quarter, when they sunk four 3-pointers, hitting five more in the second stanza.

Troy couldn’t keep up, and let things get away from them down 34-27 at half time.

“It’s harder that way because they play inside out and they just get all the shots they want from the outside,” Troy senior center Jack McLaren said. “It’s just, it was hard to guard.”

Down 34-27 at the half, and even 45-31 with 3:55 remaining in the third quarter the Flying Horses didn’t give up.

They began to lock the perimeter down. After making 11 3-pointers in the first 19:40, Colonie made just three the remainder of the game and its lead started to dwindle.
