Troy Spring Cleanup program moves towards downtown

-

TROY >> The city is into the sixth week of its annual Spring Cleanup program, with the focus of public works crews moving towards the downtown area.

The city Department of Public Works has scheduled nine weeks of street sweeping and debris cleanup, running through June 10. The Spring Cleanup will allow the city to remove dirt, brush, leaves and other items that have accumulated over the winter.

After a break Monday for routine street cleaning, city crews will be back out from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today and for the rest of the week, with the following schedule:

• Tuesday: Both sides of Emerald Greens and Brentwood and Crestwood avenues

• Wednesday: Odd sides of all streets from Hoosick Street to Sage Avenue and 8th to 17th streets, including Sherry, McLeod and Eaton roads and 19th Street

• Thursday: Even sides of all streets from Hoosick Street to Sage Avenue and 8th to 17th streets, including Sherry, McLeod and Eaton roads and 19th Street

• Friday: Odd sides of all streets from 8th Street to Orchard Avenue and Sage Avenue to Congress Street, including Walnut, Birch, Hale and Marshall streets

To aid city workers during the spring cleanup, residents are being asked to follow these guidelines and suggestions:

• Know when your streets will be cleaned. A schedule has been published and is available on the city’s website. The schedule will also will be shared through the city’s social media accounts and is available at City Hall.

• Move your vehicles so the street sweeper and DPW staff can access the complete street area.

• Residents should sweep or wash sidewalks and rake lawns before sweepers are scheduled to come. Sweeping the dirt along the curbs and out of the gutters into small piles will also help to make pickup easier.

• During the days posted, any uncooperative vehicle owners will have their vehicles towed at the owner’s expense. All streets that will be part of that day’s cleanup will be posted with no parking

signs. Neighbors are asked to notify DPW in advance if they know of any abandoned, unregistered or inoperative vehicles.

• This is a great time for residents clean alleys or backyard and cut down any weeds or brush. Place the material in a biodegradable bag or bundle the brush and branches together for easier collection.

• Regular trash pickup will occur as scheduled for each neighborhood.

The street cleaning program is not garbage pickup, but the Alamo, on Main Street next to the Rensselaer County jail, is open from 7:30 a.m. to noon on the third Saturday of each month through December for city residents with identification to dispose of yard waste, tires (at a cost of $3 each) and bulk trash such as furniture and carpets. No regular garbage, recycling or hazardous waste will be accepted.
