Fortin hurls no-hitter for Columbia
When the pressure was the highest, Columbia pitcher Jarrett Fortin was at his best Tuesday afternoon.
Fortin threw a no-hitter and got more than enough help from his offense as Columbia beat Shaker 4-1 in the first round of the Section II Class AA tournament.
Fortin had five strikeouts and just one walk. He threw 43 strikes out of 70 pitches.
Shaker (10-10) managed its only run on the back of two Columbia errors.
Will Hebert contributed two hits, including a double, four RBIs and stole a base for the Blue Devils in the victory.
Duncan Satterlee took the loss for Shaker.
Columbia (11-9), the No. 8 seed advances to face No. 1 seed Shen in the quarterfinal round of sectionals Thursday at 4 p.m.

Joe Casale doubled and drove in a run and Mike Hughes singled in a run for the Flying Horses. La Salle opens its playoff schedule Thursday at home against Guilderland (11-9).
Troy (6-12) will travel to Scotia-Glenville (13-6) for its playoff opener Thursday.
Wasaren League
HOOSICK FALLS 17, CAMBRIDGE 2 » Wyatt Whitman and Noah Conety both drove in a pair of runs to lead Hoosick Falls (8-6, 107) to a 17-2 win over Cambridge on Monday.
Whitman recorded three singles, while Conety singled and doubled. Cambridge (2-14) was led by Jake Harrington’s RBI double.
Boys tennis
LA SALLE 4, ICHABOD CRANE 3 » La Salle first singles player Brennan Buhr beat Nolan wolfe 6-1, 6-1 to help the Cadets to win. Patrick Hoffman and Sean McQuade also won singles matches for La Salle, while the doubles team of Michael Fritz and Ryan Patrick clinched the victory.

UALBANY HIRES BASKETBALL ASSISTANT » Coach
Joanna Bernabei-McNamee has announced that AJ Cohen has joined the team as an assistant coach for the Great Danes. Cohen comes to UAlbany after serving under Bernabei-McNamee at Pikeville as the graduate assistant coach for two years. He also was the assistant to video coordinator and practice player for over two years for the University of Louisville women’s basketball team under head coach Jeff Walz.
“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to join Coach McNamee and the staff here at UAlbany,” Cohen said. “The winning culture and tremendous support
from the university make it a very special program to be a part of. I greatly appreciate Coach Walz and the entire coaching staff at the University of Louisville for allowing me to pursue my career in coaching and learn from the best. I am eager to hit the ground running and contribute to the established success here at UAlbany.”
Cohen served at the University of Pikeville as the graduate assistant coach from August 2014 to June 2016. He helped the Bears to the program’s first NAIA Fab Four in 2016, Cohen assisted with film exchange, opponent scouting, game day preparation and daily practice
plans. He also served as the co-head coach of the junior varsity team.
“AJ has a tireless work ethic and is wise beyond his years, spending the past two seasons working with me building a top nationally ranked program while learning my system and style,” Bernabei-McNamee said. “His enjoyable personality allows him to be a good recruiter and his positive energy on the court is well received by the players. AJ is extremely accountable and he puts the needs of the team and our players first. His passion for basketball and ultimate success shines through in everything he does.”
