Matz set to rejoin Mets Friday

NEW YORK >> Mets lefthander Steven Matz is set to rejoin the rotation Friday night against Milwaukee.

Matz was scratched from his scheduled start last weekend in Colorado because of elbow soreness. He was examined Monday in New York and got an injection. Matz last pitched a week ago Monday at Dodger Stadium. He is 5-1 with a 2.86 ERA in six starts.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Tuesday that Matz will throw on the side Wednesday at Citi Field. If all goes well, Matz would start at home against the Brewers. Matz made his major league debut last year and wound up pitching in the World Series. He turns 25 later this month.

Collins spoke before New York played Washington. Matz would be able to face the Nationals next week if his return goes as planned.

Collins said Matz pitching this weekend would let Jacob deGrom have an extra rest between starts. The Mets have been concerned that the velocity for deGrom and fellow starter Matt Harvey has been down this year.

“Maybe it’s time for an extra day here,” Collins said.
