NY-Penn League

TRI-CITY 5, AUBURN 4 » Despite giving up a three run lead in the ninth, the ValleyCats (33-31) were able to squeak out a 5-4 victory in 12 innings over the Doubledays (25-37) on Wednesday night at Falcon Park.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth, the first two Doubledays walked and Luis Vitoria doubled to left to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

A sacrifice fly then made it 3-2, and Alex DeGoti booted a routine grounder to second base that should have ended the ballgame. That knotted the score at three a piece and sent the ballgame into extra innings.

Neither team was able to push across a run until the 12th. With one out, DeGoti and Marcos Almonte both reached base on Auburn fielding errors, putting runners on first and second.

After Miguelangel Sierra was hit by pitch to load the bases, a wild pitch with Bryan De La Cruz at the plate gave the ‘Cats a 4-3 lead. Then the ‘Cats scored one more big insurance run on an RBI groundout by De La Cruz to make it 5-3.

Once again, the Doubledays wouldn’t go quietly. After a groundout to begin the bottom of the 12th inning, Andres Martinez singled and Nick Banks doubled to put runners on second and third with just one out.

David Kerian made it a one run ballgame with a sacrifice fly, as Banks advanced to third base to put the tying run just 90 feet away.

‘Cats pitcher Carlos Sanabria then induced a groundout to the shortstop Sierra to end the threat and the ballgame.

With the victory, the ValleyCats ended their five game losing streak to keep themselves within three and a half games of the playoff hunt.
