TROY, N.Y. >> The inaugural Rich Gilooly Memorial Capital District Premier Basketball Tournament will take place this weekend across a host of different high schools in the Capital District.

Rich Gilooly was a teacher at Catholic Central High School in Troy. He attended that school, was a great player, and later returned as a coach. He died unexpectedly at the age of 38 in February of this year.

Gilooly played college basketball at Union and was an assistant coach at RPI. He eventually became the head coach at Hudson Valley Community College. He also coached at Schalmont and Bishop Maginn.

The event will be held at Watervliet H. S., CCHS, Gardner-Dickinson School, Fulton-Montgomery Community College, Mekeel Christian Academy, Schalmont H.S. and Bishop Maginn H. S. on Friday and Saturday. Teams from as far away as Maine have signed up.

There are more than 50 teams signed up grades four through 12. Those wishing to volunteer services at any of the playing venues, or contribute items for raffles, can do so by connecting with event organizers at www.adirondackhoops.com/family.

“Rich was a tremendous friend, an exceptional coach and an even better person,” La Salle Institute coach Steve Sgambelluri said. “The absolute best

compliment that I could give him is that if my son grew up to be like Rich, I’d be a lucky father. His passion for the game was second to none and his ability to connect with players of all ages was remarkable.”
