TROY - Miriam S. Abbas Engle, of Cheryl Ct died May 15 of ovarian cancer.

Born in Pittsburgh PA, she was the daughter of Shakir and Virginia Abbas and companion of Joseph E. Demars for the past ten years. She was raised in the Poughkeeps­ie area and lived in Troy NY for the last ten years. She was a gradugradu­ate of John Jay High School and earned a bachelors degree in Education from the State University of New York at Oswego, class of 1979.

Miriam was a Central Office Technician in Albany for 27 years and prior that worked for Coleco Industries.

She was an avid reader, loved her annual trips to the Florida Keys with Joe, and also enjoyed experiment­ing in the kitchen, watching a vast array of British tv shows, and being the reigning house champion of Trivial Pursuit.

Survivors in addition to Joe include a daughter, Diana Brower, Troy; a brother William Abbas and wife Kim, Lake Mary, FL; a sister, Kathleen Peace, Troy; a nephew Daniel Abbas and a niece Emily Abbas, as well as her two beloved dogs Pebbles and Chelsea.

Miriam’s family would like to extend a personal thank you to the entire staff at the Women’s Cancer Care Clinic, especially Dr. McElrath, Lisa Armao, her chemo nurse Barb as well as Jurita, Gail, Mary, and Sue.

They would also like to say thank you to Community Hospice and her hospice nurse Marsha for the wonderful care shown to Miriam.

After being diagnosed, Miriam joined the yearly Teal Ribbon Run Walk to raise money for re-re search and awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer. She would like all women to know the symptoms and to talk to their doctor when they have concerns.
