Wildcats’ Svingala pulls double win at tourney

BENNINGTON, N.Y. >> Maple Hill student Trent Svingala continued his excellent form on the mat with wins in the Freeystyle and Greco Roman tournament­s at the USA Wrestling New York State Championsh­ip in Bennington.

Svingala won a NYSPHSAA title this sea- son for the Wildcats.

The sophomore will now set his sights on the National Championsh­ips scheduled for Fargo, N.D., in July.

Boys lacrosse

SARATOGA SPRINGS 4, WHITE PLAINS 3 >> Adam Mesquita and Griffin Taylor had a goal and assist apiece to lead the Blue Streaks to a non-league win over White Plains Saturday in rainy conditions at Dietz Stadium.

Griffin Ketchum made eight saves in 24 minutes and Ryan Flemming made six saves in the other 24 to help Saratoga Springs to the win in goal.

Men’s lacrosse

UALBANY PLAYERS NAMED ALL-AMERICANS >> Five UAlbany players were honored when Inside Lacrosse announced its 2017 men’s lacrosse All-Americans Sunday night.

Connor Fields was

named a First Team All-American while TD Ierlan was placed on the Second Team. Kyle McClancy, Troy Reh and Stone Sims were chosen as honorable mentions.

Fields, a Tewaaraton finalist as a junior, joins the first team as the top-scorer in NCAA men’s lacrosse, averaging 6.65 points per game.

His 113 points, off 52 goals and 61 assists, is tied

for the sixth highest single season point total in NCAA history.

The America East Offensive Player of the Year has scored at least three points every game this year.

Ierlan, one of the top freshmen in the country, lands on the second team with a 72.5 percent faceoff rate, second in all of Division I, and first with 11.41 ground balls per game. Winning at least 70 percent in 13 games this year, the America East Rookie of the Year has tallied 309 faceoff wins, 194 ground balls and 10 points.

NCAA softball

UALBANY TO FACE ‘BAMA >> The bracket has been revealed: the UAlbany softball team will travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to face the University of Alabama at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional on Friday, May 19 at 5 p.m. “We are very excited to be going to play Alabama in the regionals. They are a great team that are coached by one of the best coaches in the game. They play in a beautiful stadium that will be filled to capacity and that atmosphere will be an amazing thing for our kids

to get to experience,” head coach Chris Cannata said.

The game will take place at Rhoads Stadium on the campus of the University of Alabama. The stadium was opened in 2000 and has a seating capacity of 3,940. Alabama is the No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 42-16. The Crimson Tide received an at-large bid after falling in their conference tournament to Ole Miss 4-1.

UAlbany earned its way into the NCAA Tournament with the America East Conference automatic qualifier, defeating Maine 6-1 on Sun-

day afternoon for the league title. The Great Danes advanced through the winner’s bracket in the tournament with an overall record of 4-1. “I’m so happy for them and so proud of them. There were so many times that we could have folded under the pressure, but they kept their focus and their composure and they never flinched. I couldn’t have scripted a better ending for our seniors,” said Cannata. Sarah Petzold, Liz Snow, Chelsea Henige, and Devin Durando were named to the America East All-Tournament Team.

Devin Durando was named the America East Tournament’s Most Outstandin­g Player.

Area golf

AIRWAY MEADOWS FRIDAY NIGHTSCRAM­BLE>> The foursome of Dan Stewart, Gary Hasbrouck, Rich Sweeney and Tweezer Scheidt shot a combined 9-under to top Kyle Schultz, Scott Tromblay, Walt Kosinski and Jim Peters in Friday night’s scramble at Airway Meadows. Hasbrouck was closest to the pin on No. 3 while Bobby Frank was closest to the pin on No. 9.
