Shortly after creating a shared services agreement with Troy, officials in the Spindle City have already taken steps at improving the 112th Street Bridge.

The span partly runs through Troy and into Cohoes.

“We were working with the city of Troy to do a shared services agreement and we finally recently got that shared services agreement done,” said Cohoes Mayor Shawn Morse.

After the agreement became official, Cohoes officials took the steps to invest just over $3,000 into new LED lights to improve some very old and worn out lighting on the bridge.

“The 112th Street Bridge is a gateway to Cohoes and it was disgusting, with broken lights and graffiti,” said Morse, “so we went out, invested again in our city and we worked out a partnership with Troy for the future, and we replaced all of the lights and bulbs with new LED lighting and fixed all of the poles.”

John Salka, a spokesman for Troy Mayor Patrick Madden, confirmed Friday afternoon that Troy is currently getting estimates from companies so it can match up the new LED lighting with the lighting that Cohoes already installed on its side of the 112th Street Bridge.

Morse said that by making these improvements to such a busy bridge, will not only be safer for people traveling across the bridge, but that it will also be more appealing to people traveling it.

“Now when you come over that bridge and you enter into our city, once again you say ‘wow what a beautiful city and what a great place to be’, and that’s just part of our everyday promise to the citizens to make Cohoes the best it can be,” said Morse.

Morse said that making improvements like this goes hand in hand with other positive things going on throughout the city.

“The improvements to the bridge helps with safety and it just goes hand in hand with our Safe Streets Initiative, the walking cop beats, and we have a new red light on that corner near the bridge to make it safer to get in

and out of the stores, as well as for people living down there,” said Morse. “We try to think everything through and make

sure that everything we do is in the best interest of the people who come here to visit, people who live here, people that may want to live here and also the businesses that operate here; so everything’s about the people and that’s what the city focuses on every day.”
