SCHODACK ISLAND STATE PARK: Schodack Island State Park comes alive with music on Fridays evenings with open mic nights. The entertainment will begin at 5 p.m. and continue into the evening until 8 pm, depending on the crowd. Schodack Landing Fire Company will be selling their great food at Friday Open Mic Nights. GRANT COTTAGE: “Wars produce many stories of fiction, some of which are told until they are believed to be true,” Ulysses S. Grant wrote in his memoirs. He wrote his memoirs out of financial need, but also because he was genuinely disturbed by the way facts were interpreted by the growing pre-Confederate “Lost Cause” school of thought. His final battle, which ended at Mount McGregor, was a war of words over the interpreta--
tion of facts – an attempt to advocate the truth. Historian and Grant author Chris Mackowski returns to Grant Cottage to discuss the fundamental question that Grant and other writers of history face: “What truth am I trying to tell, and how shall I tell it?” 1 p.m., 1000 Mt. McGregor Road, Wilton.

MARATHON GOLF DAY: Mark your calendar for July 15 for the inaugural Marathon Golf Day hosted by Schenectady Municipal Golf Course, 400 Oregon Avenue, Schenectady. Proceeds from this event will directly benefit the American Red Cross of Northeastern New York’s Home Fire Campaign to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries across the nation by 25% over a five year period. Marathon Golf Day is a unique opportunity for golfers to enjoy unlimited play from 7a.m. (shotgun start) until 5 p.m. In addition to greens fees, carts will be provided, and breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included. $75 of each $150 registration fee, along with all event sponsorship funds, will be donated directly to the Red Cross. Sponsorships and registrations are being accepted now through July 7.

REPAIR CAFE: The Village of Castleton-on-Hudson is organizing an inaugural Repair Café at the Village Hall, 85 South Main Street, on Saturday, July 15. By promoting repairs, Castletonon-Hudson wants to help reduce mountains of waste. Starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m., volunteer repair coaches will be available to help make all possible repairs free of charge. Tools and materials will also be on hand. Repairs can save money and resources, and can help minimize carbon dioxide emissions. But above all, Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is. RUNNING INJURY WORKSHOP: A free, fun interactive workshop for runners of all abilities aimed at injury prevention and treatment. A mortar blast suffered in Iraq caused hearing loss and traumatic brain injury as well as a spinal cord injury resulting in progressive paralysis. MILHAM PLANETARIUM: Williams College invites you to experience the wonders of our universe at the Milham Planetarium, located inside the Old Hopkins Observatory at Williams College. Astronomy students at the college will host free shows for the public on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. through August 3. Audiences will be treated to shows from the high-precision Zeiss Skymaster ZKP3/B optomechanical planetarium projector. The Hopkins Observatory, built in 183638 by the first professor of astronomy at Williams College, Albert Hopkins, is the oldest extant observatory in the United States. NIGHT SKY ADVENTURE: “Preparing for the Perseid meteor shower,” 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 bright meteors per hour at its peak. The shower runs annually from July 17 to August 24 and peaks on the night of August 12 and the morning of the August 13. In song and story, program facilitators Diana O’Brien and Tom Smith remind us that there were heroes on the battlefields, cities, towns and villages who built upon the legacy left by our nation’s founders and who envisioned a country of freedom and opportunity for all.
