ALBANY HUDSON ELECTRIC TRAIL: The Hudson River Valley Greenway invites the public to attend one of two important public information meetings seeking input on the proposed Albany-Hudson Electric Trail, a vital segment of the new Empire State Trail. At the public information gathering, members of the Hudson River Valley Greenway will discuss the project’s goals, opportunities, and schedule; provide a detailed description of the Albany-Hudson Electric Trail’s proposed 35-mile route; release a draft Albany-Hudson Electric Trail Concept Plan for public review and comment; answer questions and receive comments from the community. GRANT COTTAGE: “The Man Who Ruined U.S. Grant,” 1p.m. In May 1884, Ferdinand Ward robbed Ulysses S. Grant and his family of every dime they had. For his crimes, Mr. Ward (one of the boldest embezzlers of the Gilded Age) was sentenced to 10years in prison. None of the money he stole was ever recovered. CARDBOARD BOAT RACE: Hudson Crossing Park presents its 13th Annual Cardboard Boat Race on Saturday, August 12, (rain date is Sunday, August 13) at Fort Hardy Park beach on Route 29in Schuylerville from 8a.m. to 3p.m. This year’s theme is “The Erie Canal, We Dig It!” celebrating the bicentennial of the Erie Canal. Race participants will construct a “human-powered” boat made of corrugated cardboard or 100percent recycled materials, holding at least one crew member and “seaworthy” enough to race a short distance on the Hudson River. Racers may construct boats ahead of time or on the morning of the event (materials will be available at the event site for a nominal fee). During race preparations, there will be food, live music and lots of creativity. The first cardboard boat race launches at 1p.m. Admission is free for spectators.
