HONOR A DECEASED VETEAN: The Rensselaer County Honor a Deceased Veteran Program honors Elton G. Cook, Sr. on October 10 at 8:30 a.m. in the Legislativ­e Chambers, Third Floor of the County Office Bldg. 1600 Seventh Avenue, Troy. Elton served in the United States Army as a Medical Aid Man/Ambulance Driver during World War II earning the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and several shooting medals. He worked as an Ambulance Driver at Leonard Hospital for 42 years, and was captain for several years of the Knickerboc­ker Steamer Company, #1 in Waterford. POESTENKIL­L SENIORS: The Poestenkil­l Seniors hold weekly meetings every Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Sullivan-Jones VFW post in Poestenkil­l. All seniors are welcome. SACRED HARP SINGING: Sacred harp singing uses the shape-note notation system, where the round notes of the scale are replaced by squares, ovals, rectangles, and diamonds to represent the degrees of the scale. Singers “sing the shapes” before singing the lyrics. The 2017 New York State Sacred Harp Singing Convention will be held in Easton at Burton Hall (1017 NY – 40, Greenwich) on Saturday October 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, October 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to listen or sing; no experience is necessary.
