GEORGE J. “JACK” SLYER, JR.
TROY - George J. Slyer, Jr., known as “Jack” by his family and friends, passed quickly and peacefully May 24, 2018 at age 78. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late George J. Slyer, Sr. and Florence D. Milburn and the husband of 52 years of the late Florentine O’Connor Slyer. Raised in Hampton Manor, he was a graduate of St. Mary’s School in Clinton Heights and Troy High School and he attended HVCC. Jack retired after 38 years of service from a career with New York State where he met his future bride at work in 1962. He was an avid Boy Scout leader for many years and loved camping, hiking, playing chess, reading, and keeping up to date with historical books and magazines. In his later years, he enjoyed writing historical manuscripts. Jack and Florentine had been communicants of the former St. William’s Church and Sacred Heart Church, attended Marriage Encounter for many years, were members of the Fraternity of the Secular Franciscans - Third Order and were also involved with the Christian Family Movement in the 1960’s. Jack was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who, with Florentine, especially enjoyed bragging about their sons’ accomplishments and the activities and adventures of their grandchildren. Survivors include three sons and their families, George (Gina) Slyer, their children, Gessica Slyer, Geana (Conor) Harrigan, Gelisa Slyer, and Graciela Slyer and their grandchildren, Jayden Slyer, William Slyer Ryan, and Tristan Harrigan; John (Kathy Mulligan) Slyer and their children, Julia, Caroline and Ruby Slyer; and Charles (Gina) Slyer and their children, Amanda and Toni Slyer; siblings, the late Pamela Slyer O’Bryan (late James), Timothy (Ellen) Slyer, William (Nancy) Slyer and Janice (Tony) Videtto; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral will be held Thursday at 9:00 a.m. from the Daniel D. Purcell Funeral Home, 510 Pawling Ave. at Parkview Court, Troy and at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Troy where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy.
