CYCLENATION: The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association will host the Capital Region’s first CycleNation event at Brown’s Revolution Hall, 425River Street, Troy, on Thursday, September 27, from 4:30p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event will feature 50stationary bikes taking up the floor, with teams of four to eight already forming to raise $2,000or more per bike. Upbeat music and activities designed to raise awareness about stroke will complement the evening’s cycling. Cycling will take place from 5:30to 7:30 p.m., followed by a one-hour social gathering to celebrate the success of CycleNation. 11bikes are already booked, so the Heart Association encourages participants to form their teams and register now. HUDSON JAZZ WORKSHOP: The Hudson Jazz Workshop is a four-day immersion in improvisation and composition with Armen Donelian, a Hudson resident, and Marc Mommaas, a Dutch native living in New York City, held this year from August 9-12. Past HJW participants, many of them rising professional musicians, have come from Argentina, Armenia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Holland, Italy, Japan, Nigeria, Norway, Spain and the USA. The workshop culminates with a performance at Hudson Hall on Sunday, August 12, at 4p.m. featuring acclaimed pianist Jean-Michel Pilc, preceded by the Jean-Michel Pilc Jazz masterclass at 10:30a.m. at Hudson Jazzworks Studio, 338Kipp Road, Hudson. READING THE FORESTED LANDSCAPE: Discover Chestnut Hill, a 34-acre Rensselaer Plataeu Alliance property in Stephentown, through the eyes of ecologist and writer Tom Wessels on Saturday, September 29. Tom will introduce participants to methods of interpreting a forest’s history while wandering through it. Tom unravels complex stories etched into our forested landscape. HUDSON RIVER FISH COUNT: Citizen Science Volunteers are needed to join the Rensselaer Land Trust and Fran Martino, River Haggie Outdoors, for the Great Hudson River Estuary Fish Count to be held on August 11at Schodack Island State Park. Volunteers can help record and send data from ashore, or hop into a pair of our chest waders for loan to help capture fish using a 40-foot seine net. Fish species will

CARDBOARD BOAT RACING: Hudson Crossing Park presents its 14th Annual Cardboard Boat Races on Saturday, August 11, (rain date: Sunday, August 12) at the Fort Hardy Park beach on Route 29in Schuylerville. This year’s theme is “Rock the Boat.” The first race launches at 1p.m. Admission is free for spectators. Entry fees start at $20per sailor with a $50per boat maximum. Small business and corporate entry fees are available, as well. HISTORIC STEPHENTOWN PHOTOS: Photographs of Stephentown from 1907and 1908are now on display at the Stephentown Post Office. These scenes have been printed from glass plate negatives that were donated to the Stephentown Historical Society by the Lebanon Valley Historical Society. The views include the Kinderhook Creek and Atwater Village section of Garfield. These historic images will also be part of a Spring 2019exhibit of local photography at the Stephentown Heritage Center. Photographers should plan to take their own interesting views and visions of Stephentown throughout the coming year with this exhibit in mind. CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATION: Sand Lake Center for the Arts invites local artists to decorate, paint and manipulate artifical Christmas trees that will auctioned off during the holiday season at the arts center. CIVIL WAR WEEKEND: Tickets are now available for the Civil War Weekend, a fundraiser for The Friends of the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage, which will be held on August 11and 12at D.A. UNION COLLEGE ART EXHIBIT: In “Wherever the Mushrooms Grow,” Union College senior Natalya Brill presents a harmony of discord in her solo exhibition. Using incongruous phrases combined with digitally altered drawings, she creates a curious, ambiguous ether

Brill encourages viewers to disassemble the pairings, and consider both what they see initially, and what can be extracted by separating the written and visual elements. USS SLATER: USS SLATER is open to the public for the ship’s 21st season in Albany. A National Historic Landmark, USS SLATER is the only remaining World War II Destroyer Escort afloat in America. USS SLATER has become one of the best restored, most historically accurate World War II ships in the world. USS SLATER is owned and operated by Destroyer Escort Historical Museum, a private, nonprofit organization that receives no regular Federal, State, or local government financial support. The first phase of the exhibition explores the circumstances leading up to building the canal, the construction, and the famous “wedding of the waters” that marked the opening of the completed canal in 1825.
