Police Department said they arrested William Hoffay after a months-long investigation into two burglaries in the town.

On Monday, April 9, the North Greenbush Police Department said they responded to the Healthy Pet Center, located at 237 North Greenbush Road, for a report of a burglary.

Upon arriving, a news release said, officers determined that an unknown person had broken through the glass front door to gain access and had stolen money from inside the business. Shortly after, police said, it was determined that the Garlic Lover’s Corner, in that same complex, had also been burglarized. Video surveillance was available and a description of the suspect was obtained from it.

A news release said that Detective Stehr led the investigation from the outset. Using a network of resources, he determined that there were several other burglaries in other local counties that matched the same suspect description, according to the release.

Police said within a week, Hoffay had become a suspect and became the subject of surveillance. While under that surveillance, police said, Hoffay was observed committing another burglary in the City of Troy, but was able to escape arrest at that time.

The news release said that Detective Stehr and members of the New York State Police were able to locate him at his residence later that day and took him into custody on a NYS Parole warrant without incident. Police said Hoffay was held on that warrant while the investigation into the April 9 incident and other burglaries continued.

After being formally charged in the town on Tuesday night, Hoffay was brought before by the Honorable Judge Burke. Police said he was arraigned on these charges and other outstanding burglary charges from other incidents in Rensselaer County. He was sent to the Rensselaer County Jail pending further court proceedings.

Police said Hoffay is facing charges for approximately 13 commercial burglaries

throughout the Capital Region over the last several months. His spree extended into Massachusetts with two additional incidents being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police, the news release stated.

Police said Hoffay has been cooperative with law enforcement following his arrest on the parole warrant.

“This was an outstanding effort by Detective Stehr and the other involved agencies. Everyone worked together to bring these cases to successful resolutions” Chief David Keevern said in the release. “I would like to thank each agency involved for their hard work and cooperation.”
