TROY, N.Y. >> Troy Professional Firefighters hosted their annual “Fire Prevention Poster Contest” award Friday afternoon at their fire headquarters on2175 6th Ave.

Students were able to tour the firehouse, hang out and have lunch with the firefighters and perhaps coolest of all, take a ride on a 60-year-old refurbished fire truck.

The elementary school students from various Troy schools were given plaques and were recognized by Troy Mayor Patrick Madden and Troy Assistant Fire Chief Eric McMahon.

The students also had their posters hanging up and on full display at the firehouse.

“It’s wonderful to see that the kids and the schools still take an interest in fire safety and that with generations it goes on,” Assistant Fire Chief McMahon said of the continuing program. “My brother Jack who was a Troy police officer, he actually won the poster contest when he was a little kid out of school 12, so it’s good to see some traditions continue on.”

“It’s good to see the parents come down and it’s good to have our firefighters interact with the community when it’s not such a tragic event or there’s not an emergency event. It’s a happy, pleasant time for us to interact with the community,” McMahon said of the opportunity to interact with members of the community.
