TROY, N.Y. » People will once again be able to enjoy a free community meal and entertainment on Easter Sunday, thanks to Billy Carter of Kingdom Ministries and a host of other volunteers and donors.

The 7th annual free community event will take place at Christ Church United Methodist, located at 35 State St. in downtown Troy starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The event will also feature an Easter egg hunt for children beginning at 1:30 p.m. outside of the church.

Carter said thanks to numerous donors that they will have roughly 25 Easter baskets with candy and toys for children to enjoy. Carter said there will also be other donations available for people to take, such as household items and clothing.

Carter and his team of volunteers and donors help organize a free community Christmas Day and Easter Sunday meal in the Collar City every year and people are able to enjoy a nice meal together.

People will be able to enjoy fried chicken, baked ham, Korean food, fried rice, white rice, sweet potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green beans, macaroni and cheese, apple pie, bread,

beverages, fruits, and desserts.

Carter said that they expect to serve around 200 people and expect to deliver roughly 75 meals to Burns Apartments in Troy as well as anyone who calls them. Carter noted that these free community meals would not be possible with the various volunteers and donors such as the Albany Sarang Fellowship Church, Terra Nova Church, the Salvation Army and businesses such as Nite Owl News and Bella Napoli.

Organizers said that any leftover food will go to Joseph’s House and Shelter in Troy.

Members from the Albany Sarang Fellowship Church’s youth orchestra will also provide entertainment for people in attendance Sunday afternoon.

Carter said he knows that he is doing the right thing by organizing these free community meals on various holidays since he knows that community members who attend are grateful for it and enjoy it.

He recalled a new resident of Troy stopping into his Christmas Day meal last year, and he said hearing how happy she was that she found a place that helped her with so many donations and a place to eat is worth all of the effort that it takes to organize it every year.

“Someone told her about the dinner on her second day in Troy and when she got there, she couldn’t believe that she found just about everything she needed and as she talked to people there, they told her how to get all of the other things that she needed,” Carter recalled. “She was overjoyed that she was not by herself and that she found almost everything that she needed, so we do it for the community of Troy so that nobody has to be alone.”

“Because our hearts are full and overflowing, we want that overflow to run to the community and that’s another reason why we do these meals on the holidays,” Carter added.
