GEOLOGY OF THE ERIE CANAL: The Friends of Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site welcome Thomas Grasso to discuss the Geology of the Erie Canal in the Mohawk Valley: Hudson River to Little Falls at their Tuesday, May 28meeting, beginning at 6:30pm in the Enders House on Schoharie Street in Fort Hunter, adjacent to the Visitor Center.Grasso will discuss the bedrock and ice age geologic history of the region, and how this long and complex natural history affected human history by controlling the route of the canal and the obstacles that had to be overcome. Some local quarries that supplied stone for locks and aqueducts will be mentioned. Grasso, President Emeritus of the Canal Society of New York State, was society President for nearly forty years until his retirement in 2016. He was President of Inland Waterways International, based in the UK, from 2002to 2010. Tom taught in and chaired the Geosciences Department at Monroe Community College in Rochester from 1968to 1999and has authored many articles and publications on New York State and European geology and canals for both the peer review and general audience press. ST. BASIL GREEK FEST: For the 25th year, the St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church members prepare for their annual Festival, a celebration of authentic Greek food, music, and dance, starting on Friday, May 31and ending on Sunday, June 2, in Troy. Guests are welcome during Festival hours on Friday 5-10p.m., Saturday 12-10 p.m. and Sunday 12-5p.m. Church tours will be available during these times. ADULT TRACTOR SAFETY PROGRAM: Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County is excited to offer a Tractor and Farm Safety Course on Friday, May 31st hosted by Hudson River Tractor in Schaghticoke (11853 New York 40Schaghticoke, NY 12154). This program is geared for adult audiences. Statistics show that farming and operating equipment is a hazardous and dangerous endeavor. Help yourself reduce the risks of an accident and attend this informative evening session. The program will begin at 5:30P.M with a presentation from the New York Center of Agriculture Medicine and Health (NYCAMH) followed by an opportunity to be handson with some equipment. This program is perfect for farmers old and new as well as any adult who currently works with machinery on the job or in their backyard or plans to in the future.
