DRAFT RIOTS TALK: At 1:30pm Sunday, Nov 10, at the Troy Public Library, Michael Barrett, Executive Director of the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway, will present the true story about the people and events of Troy’s 1863Draft Riot. A story that doesn’t always make it into the history books, this riot was the second most destructive draft riot in the nation. This program is sponsored by the Troy Irish Genealogy Society. RENSSELAER COUNTY VETERANS BREAKFAST:

The 21st Annual Rensselaer County Veterans Breakfast, sponsored by Rensselaer County Unified Family Services, Veterans Service Agency, is served at Melvin Roads American Legion this year on Sunday November 10th, 2019. Eugene was a self-taught artist who captured his stint in the military on the envelopes of his letters home from his stations in WWII. MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY BASH: TJ’s Flightline Pub in Glenville, NY is set to host the 5th Annual Marine Corps Birthday Bash on November 10, 2019. BLUEGRASS BANJO:

Beginning Bluegrass Banjo with Mac Petrequin. Sunday November 10, 1pm-4pm. Tuition $55. Member Tuition $45. Bluegrass banjo is the familiar sound that drove such favorites as the Beverly Hillbillies Theme Song, Rocky Top, and Foggy Mountain Breakdown. In this class you will learn enough about the banjo so that you can use a variety of available instructional aids from your home and progress with learning Bluegrass banjo at your own pace. You will be exposed to the basics of playing 5-string Bluegrass banjo, including tunings, left hand chord shapes, right hand rolls, vamping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, chokes, chimes, and how to read tablatures. Our name sake Private Melvin Roads died the night before the Armistice took effect. PVT Roads served his country, and gave his life to a cause he believed in. VETERANS HONORED:

The Very Reverend Anthony Ligato, Pastor, is pleased to welcome the greater community to St. Jude the Apostle Church, located at 43Brookside Avenue, Wynantskill, for the purpose of remembering and honoring ALL veterans, both past and present, at its seventh annual Liturgical Celebration, on Monday, November 11th at 9:00a.m. Veterans will take part in all aspects of the celebration. Reverend Zachariah Chichester, Parochial Vicar and Father Edward Deimeke will assist. A list of Veterans being remembered in the Mass will be distributed with the program. At the conclusion of the Mass, all will be invited to process to the flag pole in front of the Church school for a solemn hoisting of our flag. SHORT STORY READING & DISCUSSION GROUP:

On Mondays, October 7th – November 11th at 6:30PM, Short Story writer David Sylvester will lead a reading and discussion group at the Troy Public Library. Local short-story writer Dave Sylvester discusses the short story form, looking at how writers handle plot, character and theme in their writing. Each week we will read and discuss two stories by well-known masters of the form: Lori Moore, John Cheever, Sherman Alexi, Jhumpa Lahiri, Richard Wright, Alice Munro, Raymond Carver, Margaret Atwood and more. HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING: Eric Durr will present a program on D-Day / Normandy. Durr has served as Director of Public Affairs for the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs since 2007. He served 28years in the Active Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard as an armor officer, division plans officer, operations officer, public affairs officer and civil affairs officer. He commanded a tank company, a headquarters company and a tank battalion in the

POESTENKILL SENIORS: The Poestenkill Seniors hold weekly meetings every Tuesday at 1p.m. at the Sullivan Jones VFW Post in Poestenkill. All seniors are welcome. CLE: Interfaith Story Circle – Stories of Gratitude New and Old. Wednesday, November 13, 20197-9pm, Association of Bosniaks, 6935 th Ave., Watervliet. All faith traditions encourage us to practice gratitude. With Thanksgiving approaching we can feel it in the air. The focus of the November Interfaith Story Circle will be gratitude stories, traditional and personal. Guest teller will be Yaqin Aubert, Director, of the Pir Vilayat Center for Meditation & Retreat at the Abode in New Lebanon. He will tell a tale of gratitude and humility that dates back more than 700years and has been passed down to him both orally and in print. Yaqin is a storyteller in the Sufi tradition. WRITING WORKSHOP:

Liberty Hyde Bailey was a wildly popular thought leader at the turn of the last century, and this newly collected book of his garden writings offers an opportunity to look at the way he looked at nature. His observation style is beautiful and contagious. In this class, at the Troy Public Library on Wednesday, November 13, 5:30-7:30pm, we will read from his work, and use it as a prompt for our own writings. If you can, please bring a piece of nature to the library and a journal. Could be a rock, a leaf, an ear of dried corn, a stick, a cluster of pine needles — anything that catches your eye.
