Mechanicville girls dominate Broadalbin-Perth 68-26, advance to quarterfinals

MECHANICVILLE, NY » On Saturday night the Red Raiders did not give up double- digit points in any quarter of the game against Broadalbin-Perth. Their lopsided victory earns them a spot in the Section 2, Class B quarterfinals, as they chase the sectional title.

“We definitely locked up on defense really well. We kept them at a pretty low score and our shooting was pretty on-point today,” said senior center AJ Joseph.

The Red Raiders picked up the 68-26 victory with four players scoring double- digit points, including Joseph, who helped lead the way for Mechanicville with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Topping Joseph in points were Jada Brown, with 16 points, and Charli Goverski with 14 points. Gianna Cavotta contributed with 10 points.

“We got a deep bench. We go seven, eight, nine girls at times and that keeps everyone fresh; they’re athletic girls. Going into sectionals, even if you stop one or two girls, you still got a third, fourth or fifth girl that can score,” said head coach Blain Goverski.

On the defensive side, Mechanicville did not allow more than 8 points in any quarter, giving up 7 in the first, 5 in the second, 8 in the third, and 6 in the fourth. As a them, they compiled an astronomical 17 steals, led by Joseph with 5. Brown and Charli Goverski each had 4 steals.

The Red Raiders sealed the game with a massive 27 point third quarter, taking a 38 point

lead, 58-20, with just eight minutes to play. About midway through the fourth and with a massive lead, Coach Goverski took out several of his starters, who received an ovation from the crowd as they made their way to the bench.

For Joseph, giving maximum effort through the entire game wasn’t an option, as she unintentionally quoted Yogi Berra after the game. “The game’s not over ‘til it’s over,” she said.

“As for what we need to work on, I think we need to talk a little bit more during the game, so that each of us are aware of where we need to be and what we need to do. Overall it was a great defensive game today and I hope we get really far,” said Joseph.

On the other side of the bracket #12 Ichabod Crane completed a massive upset over #5 Hudson, with a 3729 victory. Mechanicville will face off against Ichabod Crane in the Class B quarterfinals at Schalmont High School on Wednesday February 26 at 6:00 p.m.

“We’re playing that underdog role with the four seed and it’s gonna be a good game with Hudson or Ichabod Crane. That’s some- thing for us to look forward to,” said Coach Goverski.

While the Red Raiders certainly won’t be the underdog against Ichabod Crane on Wednesday, they will be if they move on to face Schalmont, Fonda or Makeel Christian in future rounds.
