Saturday, March 21 EXHIBIT OPENING:
The Spindle City Historic Society (SCHS) and the Saturday Club of Cohoes will meet jointly on March 21at 1pm to celebrate the opening of Marching Forward: Cohoes Women in History the newest exhibit at the Cohoes Visitor Center at 58Remsen St. The Saturday Club, founded in 1899, is the oldest, continuous woman’s club in NY. Many former members of the club are featured in SCHS’ exhibit about women from Cohoes who have played a significant role in history. HERITAGE HUNTERS: CANCELED - Heritage Hunters of
Saratoga County will meet on Saturday, March 21st, at 1 pm at the Town of Saratoga Town Hall, corner of Rt. 4and Rt. 29in Schuylerville. Chris Martin, Chief of Natural and Cultural Resources for the Saratoga National Historic Park, will discuss an archaeological dig that took place in May 2019. Led by William Griswold, the work was carried out by 33veterans who came from all over the country. It focused on a short battle in 1777that changed the course of the Revolutionary War when 12,000 American soldiers surprised 1700hungry British and German men. The goal of the dig was to help determine where in the old wheat field the different troops fought. Used was aerial survey, metal detecting, digging, and ground penetrating radar. Public is welcome. FAMILY SATURDAY: The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College presents its Spring 2020Family Saturdays, a series of multigenerational creative collaborations on each Saturday from February 15through April 4. Each program includes looking at artwork in the museum’s exhibitions or collections, discussing and sharing ideas, and engaging in a hands-on art activity inspired by those conversations. The programs, which are free, mostly run from 1:00to 2:30PM, unless otherwise specified, and are suitable for children ages five and older, accompanied by their adult companions. Both artists address the idea of space and its potential for a wide variety of experiences. After discussing their installations, we will create a space that we would like to see and experience in a museum. The Tang offers extra sessions starting at 3:00PM just for tweens on two March 21. Local short-story writer Dave Sylvester hosts The Short Story Café, an informal discussion of the short story form that examines how writers handle structural elements such as plot, character and theme in their writing. Each week we will read and discuss two stories by well-known (and some lesser-known!) masters of the form. Copies of the stories will be available in advance and should be read before the discussions. The first set of stories are available at the information desk of the main library. Thursday, March 26 UNDERSTANDING SHAKESPEARE:
CANCELED - Join us at the Troy Public Library on Thursdays, February 27th – March 26th from 6:30PM – 7:30PM for our Understanding Shakespeare workshop with Tom Bulger. This will be a five-session program on how to understand Shakespeare’s plays. We will start our discussion with Act 1of Shakespeare’s comedy “Pericles.” Then in the following four weeks we will discuss the play one act at a time. This program will allow the participants to put the play in a variety of contexts, such as its relationship to his other works and to the modern existential world. Tom Bulger, Shakespeare Scholar and retired professor from Siena College will lead this workshop. Please have Act One read for the February 27th discussion. WOODWORKERS SHOWCASE: CANCELED - The Northeast Woodworkers Association has cancelled it’s annual Woodworkers Showcase presentation which was to be held on March 28& 29at the Saratoga Springs City Center, as a result of the directive from the Governors office prohibiting gathering of more than 500people at an event. The Totally Turning Symposium, a part of Showcase, has also been cancelled. March 28: Shattered Reality - We will take a closer look at work in the Tang’s collection by artists Paula Wilson, “Data Unloaded,” and Francesca DiMattio, “White Umbrella.” These artists combine a wide range of visual and conceptual elements like collage and painting, architecture and history that create a distinct perspective of their world. Inspired by an array of materials such as CD’s, specialty papers and masking tape, we will create our own large-scale view of the modern world.

BANDS N BEANS: CANCELED - Lake George Arts Project’s Annual Bands ‘n Beans, March 29, 2020, 2-7pm at the Fort William Henry Conference Center, Lake George. Hot chili and hot music will be celebrated at the 29th annual Bands ‘n Beans event to be held at Fort William Henry Conference Center in Lake George on Sunday, March 29, from 2- 7PM. For almost three decades now, Bands ‘n Beans has become the biggest party of the year in the north country, a sign of winter’s end and the beginning of spring. Saturday, April 4 KIDS DAY:
On Saturday, April 4, from 9am – 12pm, kids are invited to Peebles Island State Park for the 3rd annual Kid’s Day celebration. Besides short, guided nature walks around the Island, the Visitor Center will be buzzing with activities. Some of these activities include crafts, stamping and a story in our reading center. Kids will be invited to explore animal pelts and skins and to pick up a “Peebles Passport” that they will get stamped as they complete activities. Children must bring their adults. Questions? FAMILY SATURDAY: The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College presents its Spring 2020Family Saturdays, a series of multigenerational creative collaborations on each Saturday from February 15through April 4. Each program includes looking at artwork in the museum’s exhibitions or collections, discussing and sharing ideas, and engaging in a hands-on art activity inspired by those conversations. The programs, which are free, mostly run from 1:00to 2:30PM, unless otherwise specified, and are suitable for children ages five and older, accompanied by their adult companions. Monday, April 6 POTTERY & POETRY WORKSHOP:
Join us at the Troy Public Library, Mondays, March 30th & April 6th at 6:00pm, for free pottery instruction. In this 2part workshop led by Biana Depuis of the Broken Mold Studio we will be creating a project inspired by poetry. You must attend both sessions to complete the project. We will make a hand built vessel out of clay, and experience different hand building techniques to create a beautiful work of art. This program is free and open to the public. Saturday, April 11 HAZARDOUS WASTE, RECYCLING & SHREDDING DAY:
Mayor Patrick Madden today announced the City of Troy’s upcoming Household Hazardous Waste, Electronic Recycling Collection, and Shredding Day has been scheduled for Saturday, April 11th, from 8:00am – 2:00pm. The event provides Troy residents the oppor
tunity to safely dispose of hazardous materials not accepted through the city’s normal garbage collection service. The disposal event is a free service available to Troy residents only. Residents wishing to participate in the program will be required to pick up a Household Hazardous Waste Day coupon at the Mayor’s Office in City Hall (433River Street, 5th floor). Coupons can be obtained by Troy residents (with identification—see below) during normal business hours, 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). A limited number of coupons are available, and will be issued on a first-come, first served basis. Individuals without coupons will be unable to utilize the program. After-hours coupon pickup will be available at City Hall on Tuesday, February 25, from 4:30pm – 7:30pm, and on Tuesday, March 10, at the South End/Osgood Neighborhood Meeting (TAUM 3922nd St.) starting at 6pm, and March 10, at the Lansingburgh Neighborhood Association meeting (Boys and Girls Club, 501 4th Ave.) at 7:00pm. The annual collection event will be held at the City’s “Alamo” site located directly across the street from the Rensselaer County Correctional Facility near the intersection of Main Street and East Industrial Parkway in South Troy.
