Officials make preparations ahead of ‘Rally for Black Lives’ event
TROY, N.Y. » Collar City officials have issued an update on preparations to protect public safety during Sunday’s “Rally for Black Lives” event in Riverfront Park.
As part of a statement, Troy Mayor Patrick Madden lent his support to the chance to further create a dialogue surrounding issues pertaining to race relations and equality.
“Troy should be proud to add its voice to that outcry – that black lives do matter. When people say that black lives matter they are not saying that only black lives matter. They are saying that black lives matter so that all lives will matter. That important nuance is too often missed,” Madden stated.
“I take a knee in solidarity with the peaceful protesters in humility and empathy and in acknowledgment that collectively we have not lived up to our very own ideals and with a personal commitment to strive harder,” Madden continued.
“The organizers and supporters of Sunday’s event are working toward a peaceful rally. We take them at their word. Our police department will work with them to ensure everyone’s safety so I would encourage your attendance. Theirs is an important message for our times,” Madden added.
The rally is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 7. Troy Police, Department of General Services, and city officials are assisting in implementing precautionary measures to ensure the safety of participants, local businesses, and pedestrians.
Rally participants are reminded to wear a mask and practice social distancing when possible to reduce the potential spread of coronavirus. Participants are also asked to follow instructions of Troy police if crossing roadways or high-traffic intersections.
The event may disrupt traffic routes in the vicinity of Riverfront Park and downtown Troy. Motorists are asked to reduce speeds, watch for pedestrians, and observe all temporary traffic detours and instructions from Troy police on Sunday.
The following streets will be closed beginning the afternoon of Saturday, June 6, through Sunday evening:
• 6th Avenue – between Congress Street and Broadway
• State Street – between 5th Avenue and 7th Avenue
Temporary closure of additional roadways and alleys in downtown Troy will be announced as available.
CDTA has announced reroutes for several bus lines operating in downtown Troy on Sunday, June 7, starting at 11 a.m.
