South Troy Industrial Park Road construction underway
TROY, N.Y. » Mayor Patrick Madden announced Thursday the beginning of phase one construction for the South Troy Industrial Park Road project, a new 1.3-mile traffic route which will redirect heavy trucks away from residential neighborhoods.
Decades in the making, the roadway will help improve quality of life in the South Troy and South Central neighborhoods and unlock long-vacant parcels along Troy’s waterfront for future development and economic growth.
“We are thrilled to officially begin construction on the longawaited South Troy Industrial Park Road. This important project will help divert heavy vehicles fromresidential neighborhoods to enhance quality of life, and help transform the South Troy waterfront by unlocking vacant properties for development opportunities while expanding our local tax base,” Madden remarked.
“We thank the residents of South Troy for their advocacy and support throughout this process, the Federal Highway Administration for funding construction of the roadway, and New York State Department of Transportation and the Capital District Transportation Committee for their assistance in allocating funding toward this important project,” Madden added.
“We’ve been waiting for many years for this industrial road to be built. It’s underway, it’s very exciting, taking those big truck off the residential area and have a lot more quiet in the early morning and later at night,” Sid Fleisher, who’s the primary member of the Osgood- South
End Neighborhood Group, commented on the project.
“This part of the project runs from Burden Avenue to Monroe Street. Basically, it creates a new avenue for truck traffic. It gets the trucks off of the main streets in South Troy and South Central, so it’s a real benefit for residents there,” Steve Strichman, commissioner of planning and economic development said on the first phase of the project.
“It also opens up the whole area down here along the riverfront for redevelopment and we’re already starting to see some positive signs of interest in this area,” Strichman added.
Construction of the South Troy Industrial Park Road will be completed in two phases. Phase one includes improvements to existing road and construction of new road on Main
Street and E Industrial Parkway north to Monroe Street.
Work also includes installation of new sidewalks, curbs, drainage, lighting, and water/ sewer infrastructure for future development along the route. Phase one construction is scheduled for completion in December 2020.
The South Troy Industrial Road was identified as a priority project for 2020 by the Madden administration. Phase two project operations are expected to begin in 2021.
Construction of the South Troy Industrial Park Road is the last of three long-planned transportation upgrades in South Troy, including construction of the Riverfront Bike Trail and the Troy-Menands Pedestrian Connection which links Troy’s growing bike trail network to Albany County’s Mohawk Hudson HikeBike Trail and New York State’s Empire State Trail.
