Local students among nominees for Presidential Scholars Program
ALBANY, N.Y. » The State Education Department recently nominated 25 New York state high school seniors for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, Interim Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced. The Presidential Scholar recognition is one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
In the Capital Region, Cohoes High School student Daniel Primeau, and Rensselaer Jr./Sr. High School student Elaine Gillan, were among the nominees.
“This year’s nominees are outstanding students as well as dynamic community members,” Board of Regents Vice Chancellor T. Andrew Brown said.
“Even more exciting is their potential for future greatness. These students have shown excellence in their academics as well as their artistic and technical endeavors and serve as role models for all young people. I commend these nominees who will represent New York State during the national selection process,” Brown noted. “These incredible students have shown determination and strength of character in their many successes and their accomplishments are testimonials to their tremendous efforts,” Rosa said.
“I know our legislators who recommended these stellar students are as proud of them as I am and join me in wishing each of themthe best of luck in their bright futures,” Rosa added. “I sincerely appreciate the nomination of Daniel Primeau and Elaine Gillan from my Assembly District that was put forth by Interim Commissioner Betty Rosa as part of an elite group of women and men for the Presidential Scholars program. This prestigious program recognizes the talent and commitment of these future leaders. Thank you to Interim Commissioner Rosa and the Regents for their continued efforts to shine a light on these bright stars throughout New York State,” Assemblyman John T. McDonald III, D-Cohoes, stated.
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals. Application is by invitation only. The U.S. Department of Education will issue invitations in January from among those students nominated by Chief State School Officers and from a pool based on scores on the SAT or ACT. Semifinalists will be notified in mid-April and Scholars will be notified in May. Students chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars receive a U.S. Presidential Scholars medallion. Established in 1964 by executive order of the President, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program recognizes and honors someof our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.
In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program further was expanded to recognize student excellence in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.
