Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021 TWELFTH NIGHT: Virtual Twelfth Night Celebration at Schuyler Mansion and Crailo. On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, Schuyler Mansion and Crailo State Historic sites invite you to join us for “Salutations of the Season!,” a virtual Twelfth Night celebration! From 6:00 to 8:00p.m., the event will be available across multiple social media platforms and will feature festive traditions of the 17th and 18th century. Join us as we share holiday preparations, food and other demonstrations, performances and selecting the Twelfth Night King! And you are to be a big part of the celebration! Because this year we cannot gather together at the mansion or Crailo, we encourage you to hold your own Twelfth Night party and share it with us. Purchase a “Take-Home Twelfth Night” kit ($20), which will be available at the Fort Orange General Store in January, and revel in this feast day as the Schuyler and Van Rensselaer families did! WINTER GREEN-UP: The Capital Area Agriculture & Horticulture Program and Cornell Cooperative Extension Albany County are pleased to announce the Thirteenth Annual Winter Green-Up, the Northeast’s original grazing conference. Winter Green-Up has a long tradition of presenting speakers with expertise in grazing, meat and food production, and livestock handling. Winter Green-Up 2021is no exception. 2021’s topics and speakers include: Elizabeth Marks, is a Biologist for the USDA NRCS in the Hudson Valley of New York and a certified Holistic Management (HM) educator. She will be discussing Climate Change Trends Over the Last 125Years In the Northeast and What Farmers Can Do to Be Resilient to Them (Jan. 13). Ed Rayburn is an Extension Specialist at West Virginia University, focusing on pasture and forage management and livestock nutrition. He will be speaking about Capturing and Converting Sunlight to Healthy Soil, Meat and Milk – It’s What Plants Do (Jan. 20). Fred Provenza is Professor Emeritus of Behavioral Ecology in the Dept. of Wildland Resources at Utah State University, where he directed an award-winning research group pioneering an understanding of learning’s influence on foraging behavior and how behavior links soil, plants, herbivores, and humans. EXPERTS NEXT DOOR: Acclaimed scholar and international social justice activist Dr. James Brewer Stewart will be the featured speaker for the Saratoga County History Center’s January 2021episode of “Experts Next Door.” Dr. Stewart’s talk is entitled “From Classroom to Community,” and explores the myriad ways historians today are reaching out to the general public and pushing back against an onslaught of “fake news” and “alternative facts.” He will also talk about his own personal experiences and his groundbreaking scholarship. Dr. Stewart is an engaging speaker (his YouTube videos gain a wide audience) who loves to field questions and comments. As always, the “Expert Next Door” series encourages audience participation and provides a fun, casual, and enlightening venue for learning and discussion. The January episode of “Experts Next Door” is scheduled for 7pm, Thursday, January 14. WINTER DISCOVERY NATURE WALK: On Sunday, January 17th , at 1:00pm Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park will be hosting a Winter Discovery Nature Walk.
It will take place at Camp Saratoga North off of Scout Road in Wilton. During this walk over gentle terrain participants will learn about how the plants and animals living within the surrounding environment have adapted to survive the harsh conditions of winter. Together, participants will also discuss the basics of winter tree identification. If there is snow, these programs will include searching for signs of recent animal activity, including looking for animal tracks in the snow. Program run time is approximately one hour. A second Winter Discovery Nature Walk is also scheduled for the following day, Monday the 18th starting at 1:00pm. If needed, snowshoes will be available for rental prior to the program at Parking Lot #1on Scout Road. Snowshoe rentals are $5per person, $3for kids/students. Registration is required at least one business day in advance of the event. Face masks will be required to be worn throughout the duration of the program. Participants should park in Parking Lot #1on Scout Road, town of Wilton. CLUB: Rochmon Record Club Listening Party – Warren Zevon – “Excitable Boy” - Tuesday January 19. Zoom opens at 6:30. Event begins at 7PM. Pre-Registration is Required. On Tuesday January 19th, The Rochmon Record Club will virtually converge via Zoom to listen and learn about Warren Zevon’s 3rd album, “Excitable Boy”. In the early 70’s Warren Zevon was touring as band leader and keyboard player for the Everly Brothers. By the time Warren moved to Los Angeles in 1975his reputation had preceded him. “Excitable Boy”, made with the support of the most talented musicians in LA, is Warren Zevon’s best selling album. His wit and biting sense of irony infuse every song with doom and gloom sensibilities, the perfect album to kick off 2021! The Zoom feed will begin at 6:30with an audio stream and chat, the show begins at 7pm with a live audio & video presentation by Chuck Vosganian aka “Rochmon”. A Rochmon Record Club Listening Party is meant to inform and deepen our understanding of the history of the individual performers, songs and the stories that went into the making of this classic album.
