La Salle’s speed and athleticism overpower Cohoes in 85-52 win
TROY, NY » La Salle Institute’s speed and athleticism and first year Head Coach Greg Davis’ high-tempo offense shined in all of their glory Thursday night as the Cadets hosted Cohoes on senior night.
“We had something to prove. Our seniors had senior night tonight and we wanted to play well for them,” said Davis following the win. “One through 13 did that. Everyone that got on the floor played hard.”
La Salle powered their way to the 85-52 win against Cohoes. La Salle was led offensively by Gabe Lucarelli who scored 15 points in the win. Cohoes’ Royal Brown notched 32 points in the loss.
“He’s a really good player, my hat is off to him,” said Davis on Cohoes’ Brown. “He scores the ball really well and does a lot of good things. He is super athletic. We have a lot of guys we can throw at people on defense and change paces and do a lot of different things and I think that messed with the flow of the game for them. I think that was to our benefit and a luxury we have with having so many guys.”
The seniors shined for La Salle on their special night. Bo Catherwood, a speedy and hard nosed guard scored nine. Drasean Wallace added five of his own, Lasheen Lewis had two three’s, and Kaylon Dickson added seven of his own. In total, the eight seniors for La Salle totaled 50 points.
La Salle came out firing on all cylinders in the first quarter taking a 25-12 lead with eight dif
ferent players scoring. The Cadets posted another 20 points in the second half to push the lead to 45-25 going into the half.
“We love getting up and down and obviously that is always part of the game plan so we are going to keep doing it as much as we can,” added Davis.
As the game progressed into the second half, Davis opted to go deeper into his bench and allow players like JJ Thompson and Gianni Gabriel shine late.
“Anytime you can get everyone to play and get everyone on the stat sheet in some way, shape, or form is always a good night,” said Davis. “We will take those one hundred out of hundred.”
Thompson scored nine points showing off his creativity driving to the hoop while Gabriel added a three.
For Cohoes, Shamir Fairly contributed 13 points and Nate Cunningham added four of his own in the loss.
La Salle has a quick turnaround with one day rest as they will start to prepare for a game Saturday before facing Cobleskill-Richmondville on Tuesday to kick off the month of March.
“We have some things we need to fix,” said Davis. “We are never satisfied with what we did tonight or what we did in a previous game no matter what the outcome was so we are going to get in the gym tomorrow and get better at certain things and go from there and get better for Saturday.”
