Tuesday, April 13 RENSSELAER PLATEAU PROGRAM:
April 13th Sand Lake Historical Society presents “What and Where is the Rensselaer Plateau? And Who and What is the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (RPA) and what do they do?” at Sand Lake Town Hall at 7 pm. You may have heard local weather persons referring to the Rensselaer Plateau during newscasts or perhaps a neighbor or friend mentioning a hike at a Community Forest owned by the RPA and wondered what they were talking about. Fred DeMay, President of the RPA and a resident of Sand Lake, who happens to live on the plateau for almost 40 years, will be giving a talk and answering your questions about all things Rensselaer Plateau and RPA. Did you know the RP is the 5th largest contiguous forest in New York; is an important ecological area that is home to rare plants, birds and animals (think Moose, Fisher, Otter); and is the source of clean water for over 100,000 people? Did you know that RPA was incorporated as a not-for-profit in 2008, developed a Comprehensive Regional Conservation Plan by 2013, became a Land Trust Alliance Accredited Land Trust by 2018 and has already directly conserved (2,607) or leveraged (9,765) the conservation of 12,372 acres on the plateau? RACE IN AMERICA: At6 p.m. on Tuesdays April 6, April 20, May 4, May 18, June 1 and June 15, Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns will lead a Race in America: A Reading and Discussion Group through the Troy Public Library. This reading and discussion series will explore the inception, inculcation, and function of race in American society. We will discuss this topic in order to improve our understanding of systematic, and social, inclusion and exclusion in American systems. Our goal is to tease out the implicit ways race serves as a real, and imagined, force in the lives of all Americans. This group will explore racial dynamics in America, expanding beyond the blackwhite binary and our understanding of race, and develop a deeper understanding of the interlocking forces of systemic racism. This group will be led by Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns, Professor of Africana Studies at SUNY Albany. Copies of the books will be available after March 1st. The first book the group will read is Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-First Century by Dorothy Roberts Please have this book read for the April 6th meeting. This program is supported by Humanities New York. Humanities New York is a private, non-profit organization that helps all New Yorkers to lead

After a year of virtual concerts, Caffe’ Lena has been given the green light to open their doors to the public at limited capacity! Join us on April 20th for our first in person Rochmon Record Club since the lockdown began! On Tuesday April 20th The Rochmon Record Club will meet to listen and learn about Hall and Oates – Greatest Hits Part 1 “All Killer, No Filler”. Daryl Hall and John Oates are one of the most successful writing duos in music history. In a not surprisingly easy playlist to curate, Rochmon will play, show pictures, and tell stories about 11 of Daryl Hall and John Oates’ Top 40 Hits from 1973, with “She’s Gone”, to 1980, with “Kiss On My List” and “You Make My Dreams”. Hall and Oates provided an amazing soundtrack that was ever present on Radio and MTV! There will be trivia! A Rochmon Record Club Listening Party is meant to inform and deepen our understanding of the history of the individual performers, songs and the stories that went into the making of this classic album. By listening together, we get to hear the music again for the first time. It will be great to have you on Zoom or in Person, everyone should do what they are comfortable with. HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR:
Lansingburgh Historical Society will host a very popular historical walking tour again, as requested by many. The tour will be given by Michael Barrett at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 24, 2021. Lansingburgh pre-dates Troy with the settlement starting before 1740 and the founding of Abraham Lansing’s village “New City” in 1771. Several pre-revolutionary buildings are still standing including the Revolutionary War Hospital. Also featured are several industries and old homes including those of Herman Melville and President Chester Arthur. You will meet Michael at the Melville House, 2 114th St., Troy, NY 12182. More than 50 vendors will have various varieties of chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons, veggies, plants & other agricultural items. Absolutely no dogs, cats, puppys or kittens will be allowed for sale. Four Tuesdays, beginning May 4, 6:30-8:30 p.m. This class in practical spirituality explores how spiritual laws create abundance, familyinstilled beliefs about money that may have been adopted without realizing it, hidden judgments about rich people and about being wealthy, and feelings of worthiness about accepting prosperity. RACE IN AMERICA: At6 p.m. on Tuesdays April 6, April 20, May 4, May 18, June 1 and June 15, Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns will lead a Race in America: A Reading and Discussion Group through the Troy Public Library. This reading and discussion series will explore the inception, inculcation, and function of race in American society. We will discuss this topic in order to improve our understanding of systematic, and social, inclusion and exclusion in American systems. Our goal is to tease out the implicit ways race serves as a real, and imagined, force in the lives of all Americans. This group will explore racial dynamics in America, expanding beyond the black-white binary and our understanding of race, and develop a deeper understanding of the interlocking forces of systemic racism. This group will be led by Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns, Professor of Africana Studies at SUNY Albany. Copies of the books will be available after March 1st. The first book the group will read is Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-First Century by Dorothy Roberts Please have this book read for the April 6th meeting. This program is supported by Humanities New York. Humanities New York is a private, non-profit organization that helps all New Yorkers to lead vibrant intellectual lives by strengthening traditions of cultural literacy, critical inquiry, and civic participation. Registration is required and is limited. This program, designed for community members ages 16+, will be presented using Zoom. Thursday, May 6 CITY COUNCIL MEETING:
Troy City Council meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. They typically take place in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 433 River St, Troy, but are currently being held virtually via Zoom. Committee meetings are scheduled on a regular basis. Agendas and minutes for meetings are posted on the city’s website. All meetings are open to the public. At monthly regular meetings, Troy residents can discuss any issue related to the City of Troy.
