Laviano promoted to Troy PD sergeant
TROY, N.Y. » The Troy Police Department recently promoted Officer Nicholas Laviano to the rank of Sergeant during a ceremony held at historic Prospect Park.
Laviano has served with the Troy Police Department for more than 10 years. He is a graduate of Troy High School and Hudson Valley Community College with an associate’s degree in liberal arts. He was enrolled at the University at Albany studying U.S. History but left shortly before graduation to attend the police academy in January 2010.
“Nick has always stood out to me as a leader,” Troy Police Chief Daniel DeWolf said.
“Whether it is his ability to communicate with his fellow officers or enlisting members of the community in assisting them with solutions to any concerns they have, Nick is a problem solver and always tries to help in whatever way he can,” DeWolf noted on Laviano’s leadership.
“Having worked with Nick throughout his career, I’ve seen him grow as an officer and I’ve witnessed how other officers gravitate toward him for counsel. He’s a compassionate and caring person and always offers guidance to newer officers that can sometimes feel a little overwhelmed before hitting the streets,” DeWolf added.
Troy Mayor Patrick Madden echoed those sentiments on Laviano’s promotion.
“Officer Laviano, you have taken the steps to advance your learning and hone your skills in a variety of public safety disciplines,” Madden said during the ceremony.
“Throughout your tenure with the department, you have demonstrated your leadership ability as well as a commitment to the advancement to the department as a whole. It is this type of commitment and dedication that has made Troy police department second to none in the region,” Madden continued.
“This promotion recognizes your efforts and reflects the confidence that the department and this city have placed in you,” Madden added.
Laviano previously worked the Patrol Division, served as a School Resource Officer (SRO) for both Troy Middle and Troy High School, and a walking post in the Central Business District until taking over as PBA President in September of 2017. Laviano is a lifelong resident of Troy.
