Chris Daus appointed to City Council
WATERVIET, N.Y. » Watervliet Mayor Charles Patricelli announced recently that the City Council has appointed city native Christopher Daus to the vacant City Council position. Daus will be sworn in on May 5 at the regular council meeting. Daus will fill the vacancy created by Peter Torncello, Esq., who recently resigned from the City Council to fill a vacancy on the Watervliet City Court.
Torncello replaced Judge Sue Reinfurt, who recently announced her retirement.
Daus’ appointment fills out the City Council, along with Councilwoman Barbara Diamond and Patricelli.
“We are pleased to announce that Councilwoman Barb Diamond and I have selected Christopher Daus as our newest councilman,” Patricelli said in a news release. “We had four extremely qualified applicants who made this a difficult decision. Chris will be sworn in on May 5 at the regular council meeting.”
Daus is familiar with the workings of the city, working as a city employee from 1984 to his retirement in 2020. He served as the supervisor of Parks and Recreation from 1984 to 2008 and the supervisor for Refuse and Recycling from 2008 until his retirement from city employment. He is currently employed by Parker Brothers Funeral Home in Watervliet.
“I am looking forward to working with Mayor Patricelli and councilwoman Diamond on the future of the city,” Daus said in the news release. I am hoping that my 36-year career experience from working for the City of Watervliet can bring a lot of guidance to help us.”
The new councilman is a Watervliet native and a 1984 graduate of Watervliet High School. He spent 10 years, 1983-1993, serving his country in the National Guard, attaining the rank of Sergeant with the Military Police. He graduated in 1984 from U.S. Military Police School at Fort McClellan Alabama and attended Nuclear, Biological School, Chemical School at the same installation in 1985.
Daus has also been active in his community for almost 40 years, volunteering in many groups, including: Watervliet Little League Board Member and T -Ball Coach (2011-2020); Watervliet Civic Center, Board Member (1986-2011); Watervliet Community Council, Board Member (1988-1993); Albany County Youth Bureau, Board Member (1988-2000); Watervliet Board of Education, Board Member and Vice President (2008-2014); Watervliet City Democratic Committee, Vice-Chairman (1987-Present); Albany County Democratic Committee, Committeeman (1987-Present); Ancient Order of Hibernians, Columbkill Association, Member, (2017-Present); Watervliet Elks Lodge #1500, Member (1987-Present) and Green Island American Legion, Member (2018-Present).
