MALTA, N.Y. » Area music-lovers have a new place to shop with the opening of Spa City Music.

The new business, located at 2639 Rt. 9 in Malta next to Nanola, opened its doors in late January with thousands of vinyl records to browse, along with turntables, home audio equipment, guitars, keyboards, jukeboxes and more.

Spa City Music is owned and operated by Jeff Faltskog, whose name may sound familiar to disco fans. His cousin, Agneta Faltskog, is a member of the pop group ABBA. A Burnt Hills native, Faltskog is also a musician in his own right as a pianist and composer.

Additionally, Faltskog is a self-taught expert at restoring vintage keyboards and jukeboxes — a skill that’s quite rare in today’s modern industry. “It’s an art,” he said.

Faltskog, who is passionate about the new business, previously ran a part-time shop called The Vinyl Destination out of his Ballston Spa garage. The shop operated there for about four years before expanding the business to this new space. For the past eight years, he’s been busy restoring old jukeboxes for his other business Saratoga Jukebox too.

Spa City Music is conveniently located right next door to the region’s newest recording space Bijou Studio, where musicians can use instruments and gear rented from the shop for a session.

Faltskog has a vision for Spa City Music. “The idea is to create a music mecca,” he said. “We’re trying to create something that’s more than just a music store. It’s an environment, a feeling, a place where you can come in and feel comfortable — even if you’re a beginner, or you want to cut your 18th record. We have it all.”

Above all, “We just want to have fun,” Faltskog said, encouraging one and all to come by and check out the new shop.

Spa City Music is open from noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, noon to 8 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Faltskog looks forward to hosting live music at the shop, starting with open mics and blues jam nights, which will be announced soon.

The store will also be open late for concert nights at the nearby Saratoga Performing Arts Center in the summertime.
