Dorothy Young, of Farmington

Dorothy (Fitts) Young, born Jan. 23, 1928 in Farmington, passed away peacefully on Wed. July 17, 2013 at Valerie Manor in Torrington, where she had been a resident for five years.

She is predeceased by her parents Claude and Lura Fitts, and a brother and sister-in-law Clyde and Marion Fitts. She leaves behind a daughter Cynthia Lemire of Massachusetts, and three sons and their wives: Major Duane C. Young P.H.D., U.S. Army (retired), and Lieutenant Colonel Kristina A. Young, M.A., MSSI, U.S. Army (retired) of Virginia; Bruce and Mariann Young of Connecticut and Gordon and Susan Young of New Hampshire. Dorothy is also survived by nine grandchildren and several great -grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was raised in Farmington on her parent’s farm, and lived most her life in the Farmington valley area. Once the children were grown she worked as a dispatcher at the Canton Police Department for fifteen years before retiring. After retiring from the Police Department she moved to Torrington, and enjoyed traveling around New England and spending time with her family and friends. She was a long time member of both the Congregational Church of Burlington where she served on many committees and taught Sunday school, and the Church in the Wildwood in Colebrook, where she served on the Board of Directors and for a term as president. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.

There are no calling hours. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday Aug. 3, at 10 a.m. in the Congregational Church of Burlington 268 Spielman Highway Burlington, CT. A private graveside ceremony will be held at the convenience of the family.
