WATERBURY >> Quilts that Care’s new headquarters facility at 130 Scott Rd, Suite A-4, Waterbury is up and running. An open house is Sunday March 26, from 3 to 6 p.m. The public is welcome to stop by, meet the volunteers, see the quilts, learn about the group’s growth and see how they can help.

Members provided the following, titled “A little bit about us.”

We’ve moved and are so thankful to all the volunteers who showed up at 7 a.m. on a cold Saturday in December to help us move to our new headquarters at Scott Rd. We’ve unpacked, our material is on shelves, our equipment is up and working, and our volunteers are making quilts and taking classes. We have people teaching at least 2 free classes a week and we have made over 50 quilts each month since our move. We donate these quilts to people undergoing cancer treatments, bringing them comfort, love and hope, one quilt at a time.

Quilts that Care was started in 2012 with a few people wanting to make a difference in the lives of people undergoing cancer treatment. We started and continue to meet at Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center two times a month; we expanded to donated factory space in Naugatuck but also continue with satellite meetings in Bristol, Litchfield and New Milford. We now are excited to be located in our newly opened Headquarters at 130 Scott Rd.

The new facility is now open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with skilled quilters teaching classes, answering questions and mentoring beginners. The rooms are set up with sewing and embroidery machines, with fabrics, backings, and battings.

Volunteers are always needed to help make quilts for cancer patients. However, a person doesn’t have to sew to help. Volunteers also coordinate materials, iron fabrics or put together quilt kits, help pick out fabric kits for volunteers to take home and sew. If you are a quilter, we have quilts in all stages of completions. Our volunteers coordinate materials, use cutting machines for fabrics, put together kits for quilts, sandwich tops and backings, hand or embroider labels. There is always something to do. Please come lend a hand and make a difference. Every person finds their own niche or niches!

Quilts that Care is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit and accepts donations of 100 percent cotton material or batting, sewing and quilting machines, or fabric shop gift cards every Saturday during regular hours, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

To make donation in the memory of a loved one, or just a monetary donation, use Pay Pal at quiltsthatcare.org or send checks payable to Quilts That Care, Inc. PO Box 166 Watertown, CT 06795; or help Quilts That Care by shopping on Amazon Smiles. A portion of your sale will be donated to the organization.
