Drunk city man swore at dispatchers, police say
Christopher Mahoney, 50, was charged with disorderly conduct and misuse of emergency 911.
TORRINGTON >> A city man was recently arrested after calling 911, swearing at dispatchers and not reporting an emergency worthy of the call, police said.
Christopher Mahoney, 50, of 323 Harwinton Ave., was arrested April 28 and charged with disorderly conduct and misuse of emergency 911 , police said.
Two officers were sent to Harwinton Avenue at approximately 10:10 p.m. on April 28, according to a probable cause report, to “investigate a report of an intoxicated party calling 911 and acting belligerent towards dispatchers.”
Dispatchers from Litchfield County Dispatch told police they had received a call from Mahoney, “who stated he was in fear for his life and safety from the Torrington police,” then hung up, according to the report.
The officers were dispatched to contact Mahoney due to the stated reason for the call and the limited information available, police said.
State police Troop A then called dispatchers and informed them that Mahoney had called them as well, again saying he was afraid for his safety, according to the report.
Dispatchers informed the officers while they were en route to his house.
LCD then called the officers at 10:16 p.m., according to the report, indicating that they had received another 911 call from Mahoney.
“The 2nd call consisted of Mahoney swearing at dispatchers when asked routine questions pertaining to emergency calls,” wrote the officer in the report. “The 2nd 911 call resulted in Mahoney being belligerent toward the call taker and causing a disruption in service before hanging up without providing any information related to an emergency sufficient for making a 911 call.”
When an officer reached Mahoney’s home, the man “admitted drinking alcohol and was observed to be intoxicated and in an agitated state,” police said. Mahoney said he wanted to file a complaint against Torrington police regarding “treatment he experienced from Torrington Police officers earlier in the evening,” the officer said in the report.
“Mahoney indicated he called 911 because he felt he was threatened by the Torrington Police who said they would arrest him if he continued to ‘open his mouth,’” wrote the officer. “Mahoney further stated he also called because he felt a supervisor would not take his complaint after speaking with the officer in charge and being told to call back the following day when he was not intoxicated.”
Mahoney was arrested, held in lie of $2,500 surety bail and scheduled to appear in Bantam Superior Court on May 1.
