Super Saver to close at end of month
WINSTED >> The Winsted Super Saver will close at the end of the month, owner John Dwan announced Thursday afternoon.
Dwan has operated the grocery store on Main Street since August 1981.
“After a good deal of consideration I have decided to close the Winsted Super Saver. Unfortunately an agreement on the sale of the store could not be reached in time to coincide with my scheduled retirement,” wrote Dwan in a release. “It has been my honor and privilege to serve the Winsted community for these 35 years. I have enjoyed living and working in the community and especially lending a helping hand to all of the worthy causes that have knocked on my door.”
Dwan thanked the patrons that
have supported him and the store over the years.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all of my customers, employees and vendors that have supported the Winsted Super Saver and who continue to support me now,” wrote Dwan. “The Winsted Super Saver will remain open until the end of May. Sales and discounts will be advertised in the store and in the media.”
In March, as he first discussed plans to retire, Dwan was aiming to sell the space to the Community Health and Wellness Center of Greater Torrington.
This proposal was effectively rejected by the Planning and Zoning Commission in April, as members denied an application for a special permit required for the medical institution to occupy the building on Main Street.
That decision is now the subject of a lawsuit, as the wellness center has alleged members voted on the proposal despite a conflict of interest.
Dwan has said in recent weeks that he sought to sell the space on Main Street to a grocery store or other chain, but was unable to find a taker for the building.
Community residents aiming to start a grocery co-op have discussed their interest in the space in the past.
He was recognized for his years of service in 2015, when he was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Torrington-Winsted Area Rotary Club.
“Winsted… is filled with the people that care about each other and for each other. A lot of them are in this room tonight, and they know exactly what I mean. I’m happy just to be a part of the town, and do the best I can every day,” Dwan said at the time.
