Flanders Farm School is held monthly

-

WOODBURY » Flanders offers an exciting program for young children with a caregiver where they can be “a farmer for the day” visiting, learning and helping feed the animals that make their home at the Flanders North Barn. Starting in September and continuing one Friday each month through November the focus will be on a different farm animal. Each program includes art projects, stories, hikes or puppet shows to create an exciting agriculture adventure together!

Farm School kicks off on Sept. 15 with the theme “Baa, Ram, Ewe” when they will be learning all about sheep!

Kids and their caregivers will meet the Flanders Shetland sheep and feel their beautiful, soft wool used for knitting and felting. They will see a yarn-spinning demonstration and learn how a shepherd takes care of these incredible wooly wonders. They will then enjoy a hands on experience using some wool for an art project to take home.

On Friday, Oct. 27 it’s “Harvest Time”. We will be taking a hayride to the pumpkin patch to meet a friendly scarecrow that passes out treats. Learn about the lifecycle of a pumpkin, our busy bee pollinators and pick your own pumpkin for a pumpkin painting party! (Please dress for a mess)

Turkeys are the theme of the Farm School Day being held on Friday, Nov. 3.

Learn interesting turkey facts, discover what turkeys eat, learn about different breeds of turkeys and create a turkey art project for the holiday table.

Activities will be based at the Flanders North Barn located at 644 Flanders Road in Woodbury from 9:30 to 10:30. Pre-registration is required.

The cost is $5 for child and caregiver for those who are Flanders members and $10 for non-members. Those interested may register online at www.flandersnaturecenter.org or call 203-263-3711, ext. 10, for more information.

Presented as a unique opportunity for all young children to experience and learn about farm animals close up, the program is just one of the preschool program offerings held at Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust during the year. Find a full listing of all the programs for kids and adults by visiting their website or on their Facebook page.
