THANKSGIVING DINNER: The staff at Oliver Wolcott Technical High School, 75 Oliver St., Torrington, will once again open their doors to the public for the 33rd annual Thanksgiving Community dinner, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. A tradition since 1982, this year’s traditional dinner will once again be prepared by the school’s Culinary Arts Department, under the direction of Chef Michael McDowell. There is no charge for the meal and take-out meals are available. Anyone who does not have a place to go or those who otherwise will be alone (individuals or families) on Thanksgiving Day are welcome to come to the luncheon. Reservations are not required. Free transportation will be provided by Kelley Transit of Torrington from Trinity Church in Torrington. Pick-ups will be at 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. from Trinity Church. NO TRASH PICKUP: There will be no curbside collection of garbage and recyclables on Thanksgiving Day in Torrington. All municipal solid waste and recyclables regularly scheduled for Thursday and Friday collection will be one day behind schedule. Thursday’s regularly scheduled collection will be on Friday; and Friday’s regularly scheduled collection will be on Saturday.

SQUADRON MEETING: A Meeting Northwest Hills Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol Auxiliary of the United States Air Force will be held Thursday, 7-9 p.m. at the Torrington Armory South Main Street. For more information , call Commander Tim Ceritello at 860-620-3670 or email timceritello@gmail.com.

HOLIDAY DECORATING CONTEST: Torrington’s Annual Outdoor Holiday Decorating Contest will be held on Tuesday, Dec 12, sponsored by the Torrington Parks & Recreation Department in conjunction with Torrington Lions Club. Displays should be lit from 6-9 p.m. and consist of the following: Commercial: Christmas Display, and Residential: Decorated Doorway, Nativity, or Christmas Display. Friday, Nov. 24

LIGHT UP MAIN: The City of Torrington Parks & Recreation Department will hold the annual Light Up Main event Friday, Nov. 24. Events begin at 4:30 p.m. at Coe Memorial Park. The event will include music by Vin Avallone, performances by the Torrington High School Choir and a reading of a Christmas story to children by the mayor. The Parks & Recreation Commission will serve hot chocolate and popcorn to attendees in the park. The Coe Memorial Park tree lighting will take place at approximately 5:30 p.m., followed by a parade up Main Street to City Hall for a second tree lighting and performance by Nutmeg Conservatory dancers. The final lighting will be at the Merriman House on Main Street. Activities are free.

LARC FESTIVAL OF TREES: LARC presents its 16th Annual Festival of Trees, held and hosted by Valerie Manor at 1360 Torringford St. Lead sponsors are Valerie Manor and Thomaston Savings Bank. WINSTED BOOKSTORE: Friday, November 24 at 7:00 p.m., Laura Nader will present her book, What the Rest Think of the West, Friday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Winsted Community Bookstore, Main Street, Winsted. Nader is Professor of Anthropology at Berkeley and has been since 1960. She was the first woman to receive a tenure-track position in that department. She was born in Winsted and is the author of more than 280 published books and articles.

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: Our Lady of Grace Church of the St Louis de Montfort Parish, 715 Bantam Road, Bantam, will hold a Christmas Bazaar Nov. 25, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Food available for purchase includes hot dogs and chili. To reserve a space or for more information, call Janice at 860-387-6435.

HOLIDAY MOVIES: The Warner Theatre is once again kicking off the holiday season by inviting the community to enjoy two films on our big screen for the 5th Annual Holiday Movie Event on Saturday, Nov. 25. ARTISAN MARKETPLACE: The historic Van Vleck House at Flanders Nature Center is the setting for the annual “Artisan Marketplace, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, through Dec. 17. The Van Vleck house is located at the corner of Flanders and Church Hill Roads in Woodbury.

Sunday, Nov. 26

HOLIDAY MARKETS: The Goshen Farmers Market is once again holding Sunday afternoon Holiday Markets every Sunday through Dec. 17, 1-4 p.m. at the St. Thomas Church Hall, 71 North Street, Route 63, Goshen. The market provides local seasonal produce for the holidays, as well as quality handcrafted gifts made locally. GFM Holiday Market is still accepting vendors of quality locally produced items. GIFT SHOP OPEN: The Grotto Gift Shop at the Shrine of Lourdes in Litchfield will be open starting Nov. 5, Monday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 11:30 a.m. (after Mass) to 4 p.m, until Dec. 23. MORRIS TREE LIGHTING: Morris will light its Holiday Tree on the Morris Town Green with Christmas Carols with the Wamogo Regional High School chorus after Santa Claus officially lights the tree. Then head to community hall for hot chocolate and treats, a holiday craft and meet with Santa (grades 6 and under. Events begin at 4:30 p.m. and all are welcome.

OVERNIGHT PARKING: From now through March 31, 2018, all parking on city streets in Torrington is banned. Any vehicle parked for more than an hour during this time period will be fined $20 for each time they are in violation. During a storm, vehicles may be towed at owner expense if the owner is not available to move it. This ban is a safety measure for motorists and emergency vehicles, improving the efficiency of plowing and clearing over 40 square miles of city streets.

NORTH END TREE LIGHTING: The North End Community Tree Lighting will take place on Thursday, Nov. 30. at the Torrington Police Department. The event will include a selection of holiday music prior to the tree lighting and will begin at 5 p.m. The public is welcome.
