Police: Watch out for holiday scams

-

TORRINGTON — Members of the Torrington Police Department issued the following statement about phone and email scams, which have become even more prevalent during this holiday season.

“As we are in the midst of the holiday season, the Torrington Police Department would like to remind city residents to be aware of phone, email and internet scams that are currently circulating in several different formats,” the statement reads.

“Residents should be skeptical of any strange phone calls about a family member in jail, owing the IRS back taxes, power company bills or calls about a virus in your computer,” police said.

Residents should question any solicitor that requests payment over the phone, in the form of a store gift card, Itunes card, or pre-paid credit card or is asking for cash to be deposited directly into an unknown bank account.

“Never give personal information, credit card numbers or bank account information over the phone unless you are certain who you are speaking with,” police said.

If anyone receives this type of phone call or email and is not sure if it could be a scam, the Torrington Police Department suggests you call them to ask about it, or conduct a quick internet search of the phone number. They also advise you speak to family members and friends about this to make sure someone you know doesn’t fall victim to one of these scams.

To reach the police department, call 860-489-2036.
