-

THOMASTON — Landmark Community Theatre is holding auditions for its second production of the 2018 season, “To Kill a Mockingbird” Dec. 18 and Dec. 20, 7-9 p.m. in the black box theater at the Thomaston Opera House.

Lucia Dressel will direct this play with Michael Calabrese as stage manager. The show will open for weekend performances on Saturday, March 10 and run through March 25 for a total of 8 weekend performances. There will also be two daytime performances for schools, March 9 and March 15 at 10 a.m. All cast members must be available for these shows.

Rehearsals will be held Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday evenings, 7-9 p.m. As production time nears, rehearsal time will increase. Also, in case of inclement weather and cancelled rehearsals, expect to have rescheduled times. Because of the intensity of this drama, there must be a strong commitment to rehearsal dates and times. Auditioners will be given script sides to read at auditions. Monologue memorization is not required.

“To Kill A Mockingbird” is the Pulitzer prize winning novel by the late Harper Lee, adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel. Its setting is 1935, when racial tensions are high in Maycomb, Alabama. Nonetheless, young Jean Louise Finch — or Scout, as she is fondly called — manages to live a rather carefree, privileged existence, insulated from issues of race. All that changes when Scout watches her father, Atticus Finch, defend an innocent man, Tom Robinson, against a potential death sentence, which looms threateningly against him because of prejudice due to race. Scout begins to realize that just because society portrays something as being true doesn’t mean that it actually is fact. With the help of Atticus, and her older brother Jem, Scout learns that “growing up” often means doing what is right, even when it comes at great cost. Please be aware that this play contains both mature content and language.

The company is looking for 10 men and 6 women for parts with dialogue, as well as additional cast.
