- — Doug Bonjour

WHEN/WHERE: Monday, McDougall Stadium at Trumbull High School, 6:30 p.m.

HOW THEY GOT HERE: Ansonia breezed past NVL rival Seymour, the No. 8 seed, 51-16 in the quarterfinals, then beat No. 5 Stafford/East Windsor/Somers 52-19 in the semifinals. St. Joseph crushed No. 7 O’Brien Tech 62-0 in the quarterfinals, then defeated No. 3 Rocky Hill 49-20 in the semifinals.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: Ansonia has won a CIAC-record 20 state titles. This will be the Chargers’ eighth straight appearance in a state final and 32nd overall. They are seeking back-to-back titles. St. Joseph is seeking its 13th title in its 17th all-time appearance in the finals. The Cadets’ last championship came in 2014, when they beat Ledyard, 37-7.

PLAYER TO WATCH, ANSONIA: Markell Dobbs, RB: As goes Dobbs, so goes the Chargers. The senior has rushed for a ridiculous 2,063 yards and 35 touchdowns on 144 carries. He’s scored at least twice in every game this season.

PLAYER TO WATCH, ST. JOSEPH: David Summers, QB: The Cadets have a clear edge in the passing game thanks to Summers, who has thrown for 2,962 yards, 44 touchdowns and only four interceptions as a junior. He’s completing 66 percent of his attempts.

STORYLINES: The dream Class S final has come to fruition. Two of the state’s winningest programs will square off at Trumbull High’s McDougall Stadium. Ansonia has crushed every team in its path this season, winning all 12 of its games by at least 18 points. Meanwhile, St. Joseph hasn’t lost since a 42-10 setback to two-time defending Class LL champion Darien in September. This, of course, is a rematch of the 2010 Class S final, which St. Joseph won, 49-28.
