Free Narcan training scheduled

KENT — Free Narcan Training will be offered on March 23, 5-6 p.m. at Kent Town Hall, 41 Kent Green Boulevard, Kent, for those who live and work in the Region One communitie­s.

The training will include: overdose prevention strategies, signs and symptoms of overdose, how to administer Naloxone, Good Samaritan Law and support informatio­n and resources.

Narcan (Naloxone) is an opiate antidote. Opioids include heroin and prescripti­on pain pills such as oxycodone, codeine and morphine. Narcan is a prescripti­on medicine that blocks the effects of opioids and reverses an overdose.

Trained individual­s are allowed to possess and administer Narcan to a person having an overdose. Narcan kits are available to those who are uninsured or under-insured. A pharmacist from Kent Station will be at the training to fill prescripti­ons. Participan­ts should bring their insurance card and prescripti­on cards.

The training is sponsored by the Northwest Corner Prevention Network and the Housatonic Valley Coalition Against Substance Abuse. The event is funded by a grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administra­tion through the CT Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
