Master puppeteer to visit arts academy
TORRINGTON — Connecticut Academy For The Arts is presenting an exclusive performance of “Just Deserts” by Marilyn O’Connor Miller, a master puppeteer and recording artist, at 4 p.m. Thursday at CAFTA’s Cineteque Theater, 100 Prospect St., Torrington.
Miller studied with Jim Henson, Tony Montanaro in Maine, and has appeared on the Circle 7 ABC TV series and at numerous museums, festivals, regional and national events during her 60year career. She is a multimedia storyteller who is equally proficient at performing with puppets or masks.
“Just Deserts” is the selection of international stories told using her two signature puppets, “Tiffany” and “Piccolo.” Stories usually include “Chen Ping And His Magic Axe”(China), “The Tongue-Cut Sparrow” (Japan), “The Old Woman And The Vinegar Bottle” (Scotland), and “Zio Lupo” (Italy). These stories explore love and kindness toward animals, greed for material things and gluttony. In each one, the main characters are rewarded accordingly in a deserving manner, ie: “Just Deserts”.
“Just Deserts” is free to children age 7 and older, including their parents and teachers, thanks to a grant provided by the Department of Economic and Community Development, Connecticut Office of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Seating is limited so reservations are requested. Doors open a 3:45 p.m.
