Making Nick’s orange, fingerless mitts
Nick wanted his grandmother to make him fingerless mitts. They had to be orange.
That’s what I was informed when Nick, his grandmother, sister and mother arrived at the shop. I asked Nick some questions regarding these mitts, so I understood exactly what we were looking for.
It seems that orange is Nick’s absolute favorite color. He has to wear something orange everyday.
“He always wears orange,” his younger sister, Olivia, chirped.
After a bit more discussion we found a pattern that Nick approved of. He also wanted to have yellow and red to be added. Flames would be great he thought, but grandmother shook her head nervously, “Let’s keep it simple,” she said. Nick conceded to stripes.
During our conversation, I found myself drawn to this little boy. He knew exactly what he wanted — not in a bratty way, but in a very smart, articulate way. He seemed much older that his actual age. When he was choosing his yarn, he decided on a vivid red, bright yellow, the perfect pumpkin orange. The yarn was bright in color, yet soft and cozy. Nick was pleased.
Now it was up to his grandmother to knit them up.
During our Thursday night knitting group, I found an easy to knit a flame pattern for his grandmother to add, making Nick’s mitts perfect.
We were all so excited to see how well they came out, and how surprised he would be with flames.
Now all we had to do was to wait for Nick to get them. I’m not sure who was more excited about these mitts.
I later received a picture of Nick and his new mitts. Do you think he liked them?
