Warner offers ‘Cinderella,’ ‘Monty’
TORRINGTON — The students of the Warner Theatre Center for Arts Education will present Rogers and Hammerstein’s ‘Getting to Know’ version of “Cinderella” in the Nancy Marine Studio Theatre on Friday and Saturday, as part of the Young Actors Series sponsored by The Lufkin Family Foundation.
The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.
In this specially created G2K version, all the beloved songs and familiar characters are present and accounted for. However, the entire script has been con-
densed to better suit young attention spans, and the plot has been slightly altered so as to highlight some important lessons that exist in this timeless tale.
The Young Actors Series gives students of the Warner Theatre Center for Arts Education the unique opportunity to showcase the skills they have learned in their performing arts classes through highcaliber, full-scale theatrical productions on the Warner’s main stage and Nancy Marine Studio Theatre Stage.
Performances of “Cinderella” are Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. To purchase tickets, call the Warner box office at 860-489-7180 or visit warnertheatre.org.
“The Full Monty’
On two weekends beginning
Saturday Warner Stage Company will present “The Full Monty” on the main stage.
Based on the cult hit film of the same name, “The Full Monty,” a 10-time Tony Award nominee, is filled with honest affection, engaging melodies and the most highly anticipated closing number of any show.
While spying on their wives at a “Girls Night Out,” a group of unemployed steelworkers from Buffalo see how much they enjoy watching male strippers. Jealous, out of work and feeling emasculated, the men come up with a bold and unclothed way to make some quick cash. In preparing, they find themselves extremely exposed; not merely physically but emotionally.
As they conquer their fears, self-consciousness and prejudices, the men come to discover that they’re stronger as a group, and the strength they find in each other gives them the individual courage to “let it go.”
The play, which contains adult language and situations, is directed and choreographed by Roxie Quinn with music directed by Michael Berkeley. Performances are May 5, 11 and 12 at 8 p.m. and May 6 and 13 at 2 p.m.
The production is from the book by Terrence McNally, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek. Based on the motion picture released by Fox Searchlight Pictures, written by Simon Beaufoy, produced by Uberto Pasolini and directed by Peter Cattaneoe. It is presented by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
To purchase tickets, call the Warner box office at 860-489-7180 or visit warnertheatre.org. The show is sponsored by DNR Laboratories.
